Ok, we have talked enough trashes & sins of the sockeye fishery. How about, for a change, talk about its goodness, despite objection from the point of ethics by some members. There's got to be some goodness to the fishery if you take the positives. Come on guys, think about it, even as bad as Saddam Hussein, he didn't kill any of his kids, or did he? ;D As ugly as Bin Ladin, he didn't send any of his family members on suicide bombing missions either. ;D So, even if you oppose or hate the 'bad & ugly' fishery, you must be able to think about something good despite its faults. You've got to be fair, otherwise you look too biased or brain-washed against the fishery. ;D
How about one positive point from each person. You can repeat or express your agreement on points other members already express too, so we can see how you value this fishery. I start first.
***** For a time, you have become a superman or superkid to your family ******
Well, last coho & steelhead season you might look too miserable, not a fish to show. You wife & kids scorned you when you came home empty most of the time. Your wife might start suspecting where you actually went. :( Now you limited out repeately before 7:00am and load your dinner table with delicious fish. Your family now think you are their hero, and that your fishing skill, as reflected by your limit catch in no time, seems to have improved drastically and looks out of the world to them. :o So they will cheer you on and kiss you good bye to send you on your upcoming coho fishing trips, expecting your limit catch (4 fish) in no time too...., and expecting you to come home early to go shopping, lunch, movie, & dinner with you..... Good luck my friends. :D :D But at least for a time in summer, you look superman (or superfisherman) to them.... ;D ;D ;D Up Up & Away !!!!

Takes the pressure off my local fishing hole

Good post !!
I had a good time this year, I only made it out a grand total of four times to the Bar this year but everytime I went I think I met a new member from this site.. that was a good thing for me, I also was able to bring home a few nice salmon for my girl which was a nice thing, and I was able to give my girls father a few fish which made him very happy which is a very good thing because soon I am going to ask him for his daughters hand :) lol
Over all it was a good year and I did not really run into any troubles, just the odd ignorant person who was trying to cause trouble

Despite all the opinions out there, once you've got a fish on the end of your line, its ALWAYS a fun time bringing it in and playing a fish. I'll never get tired of the feeling of a fish on your line.
That and the tasty meat......you just can't beat a sockeye.
-
TR, that is one I never thought of. What a deal! Sockeye to land a girl, LOL! :D
-
i noe flossing is entirly over and all but how exacltly do u make a setup for flossing so you get so much action? like size of hook compare the size of corky to someting and what weights, how much leader. thanks guys ill need it for next season.
-
I had an automatic in with my father in law to marry his daughter, he use to guide and i love to fish , what more is there to ask for
Man you would think if you learned from a guide you would be able to get a fish to bite youre presentation..
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yep, it is a fishery that is so productive that the whole family want to be there to enjoy the good time in summer. Many memorable moments will stay with the children for life, remembering how they spent some quality time with their father or parents every summer.
It is the only fishery which brings about economic boom to the area, attracting fishing tourists from all over the world.
Like Nuggy, I didn't find sockeye fishermen that rude or hostile, even in Pegleg. Most people are genuinely helpful and friendly. I guess it also depends on your own attitude that you carry to the river. A helpful and sharing sockeye fisherman will not make too many enemies around you. I also notice in some popular bars, sockeye fishermen are generally not that bad. They understand that sometimes lines will cross each other, just a price you pay to fish in crowded condition.
Yep, when you give away a sockeye to friends & relatives, or even to a needy widow, you just see the tremendous appreciation in return. Sockeye does work some magic there. If you give away a bass, will you still land your girl? ;D
-
This was my first year fishing for Sockeye and did I ever have a blast... For me the positive would be the display of Sockeye Aerials. I can now say, I have had a fish jump 5 times in a single fight. It's a beautiful thing. ;) And I thought steelhead where the big jumpers :-\
-
hmmmmm....sockeye taste good...
-
Very few members saying anything good about the fishery. Liketofish says it right. There are members here who are totally biased or brainwashed about the 'bad & ugly' sockeye fishery that they cannot even say one good thing about the fishery. It is as if they say one good thing about it, their 'saintly fishing status' will be tainted. That is how unfair this sockeye fishery has been viewed. I don't think I personally will take seriously any of these anti flossing members' view on this fishery from now on. ;)

Re: GOODNESS of sockeye fishery :P
-
The real goodness comes out when their cooked to perfection. Unfortunately garbage is everywhere slobs leave it, even if they don't fish.
-
That is right. You go to any rock concerts, any fire-work shows, any car-racings, any vedder river camp sites, any large crowd gatherings, you will see these messes. Even theatres, just watch what's left after the shows. It has nothing to do with sockeye fishery, just watch all the garbages dumped along the freeway requiring constant cleaning. What has it to do with fishing, or for that matter sockeye fishing. It is the ulgy part of human nature. When there is a large pouplation sample, you will see the bad ones. You take a small village or town, you will not hear of a murder in years. You take any big city, including our beloved Vancouver, ranked #2 city in the world, you cannot avoid hearing about murders, rapes, robbery & what have you, day in & day out. Just facts of life. :( Therefore, be fair to most law-abiding and nature-caring sockeye fishermen. :)
-
so where were all these law-abiding and nature-caring sockeye fishermen on sat?
I could have used some help.Personally I dont think there are any.
-
So you are out there one day and you are a law-abiding and nature caring person?
Sorry to burst your bubble. But a few family friend and my family visit parks, playgrounds, and fishing grounds do cleaning up many times a year, just to teach kids be sure not to be a burden on nature and society.
We're glad that there are others that would help to make those fishing grounds a better place. But when you start being sarcastic, biased, over generalizing, you're not much better.
-
Sockeye fishings finished guys, give it a rest.

its my attempt at a "shame the Johns" deal.
I'm not gonna list my bad or good deeds, I didn't do em for credit or to be a hero, but I'm sure gonna squawk when I see something that hurts whatever I feel passionate about, and I wish more people would also.
-
People should always bring at least a shopping bag along each time they fish, and do a little cleanup of the area around them. I try to do that every trip now, to make up for not going on one of those major clean ups you guy's do. Though I'm sure i'll join you soon cleaning up as well. I made special trips to the Coquitlam to pick up all the batteries left in and around the river. I do a lot of hiking up to places and you see the garbage in some of the most scenic areas :-\
-
its true.In one conversation i had with a relative working in forestry I was told there is not one remote spot on the rock or the smaller islands that is bare of litter, the most common was MacDonald's wrappers.Thoughtlessness is rampant but i can only complain about or help deal with one area at a time.
-
All good points from everyone both of the negative and the postive. My GOODNESS of the fishery was that I got my future brother in law and his wife out and she managed to have a great time by hooking fish left right and centre. She's been out in a float tube now and is learning to fly cast. Anything to get people certainly more interested in fishing is the plus but any guest that was taken out was given strict instructions that this is only to be done here and nowhere else. My new thing this year was to bring along a bag each time and clean the stretch of shore as best as I could. I came at all times of the season so it should be pretty clear until next year.
-
This was the first time I had the opportunity to get out and partake in the harvest to the degree that I did! Had a lot of fun and met some great people! A lot of very good discussion other than fishing. Witnessed several people cleaning up the banks and showing responsibile attitudes, at least where I did most of my fishing! Yes Peg was a zoo!!! Don't know what we can do! But overall it was a good season.
-
Talking about litter,,, try your local middle or high school! Yes a lot of the banks were a mess but look around the lower mainland in general! Where ever people are in large numbers there is a lot of garbage. You should come up here after MOuntain Fest! If only we can get people to realize or at least care!
-
Actually I had a chance to show my nephew (a younster new to fishing) what to do after we caught our limit. After we limited & packed up at Seabird, he saw me picking up bundles of tangled lines stuck to rocks & he asked why. He got a little lesson about showing some responsbility to the river and the goodness nature gives us. It is up to invidividuals what they want to do with their fishing. We cannot control what others want to do. We can only do our own. BwiBwi has a valid point. A great many sockeye fishermen do their own clean up in their own bars or parks w/o saying much. To blanket label them as villains to the river is not fair.
Even w/o a big gathering, you'll still find people throwing out garbages every where. Just look at all the garbages littered on both sides of the free way if the cleaning crew did not work that section for a while. They don't need festivities to dump their wastes.

Got to keep working at it, the more people that take the time to cleanup one day it may be the trendy thing to do. I am working with the Environment Minister to try to get more teeth in the laws. Hit them where it hurts, in the pocket book.
Talking about the litter problem at schools that is where it could help if the school board, principal and teachers can work with the students to keep the school grounds clean. Everyday have one class go out and cleanup what has been dropped, maybe they will think twice about throwing it if they have to go out and clean it up later.
There is something for you to start at your school bigguy. ;D ;D

I wish some of the hundreds that were at Peg during the opening would have done the same. :( :( We picked up so much line on Saturday and there is still more out there. I hope the ones still out there bb'ing do not drop more but I imagine they will continue to do so as they continue to fish non selectively after the request from FOC to do so. They just want to continue to do there own thing, very sad in deed.
-
Peg is really a bad example of bbing. Besides being crowded, for some reason, it is also a magnet for newbies. Line crossing from short casting is almost non-stop. Sometimes lines are hopelessly tangled that people need to cut the lines, which probably contribute to lots of broken lines on the bar. The only good things about that bar is being the closest major bar with very few snags, and you get to park not too far from where you fish. Other smaller or more remote bars seem to attract more seasoned rods, and generally people are much more friendly & socialable to each other, and they keep their bars in much better shape than the larger bars.
-
thats like saying Pickton is a really bad example of a murderer ::)
-
(http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/shocked.gif) people are people nothing we can do about that . hopefully through education we can change the younger angler and the newbies. but untill then we fish theses bars and when we are done we pick up our garbage and theirs and maqke it a better place to fish for a little while anyways(http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/thumbs-up.gif)

It is a problem Chris and I am one of the "Garbage Patrol" but man it is hard work! I have watched young teens standing only feet away from the cans and still drop their trash on the ground. Was tols by one little S*&^ that I get paid to work at the school so then I should clean it up! We are working hard at developing the citizenship needed! But when our kids see the litter all around town etc. how can we win! But we will keep trying!
-
Trust me I know where you are coming from. I have worked for a school board for just over 13 years.

This is where it has to start first at home and then at the schools then maybe the streets may become litter free, a hard task I know. Just like trying to deal with the flossing issue. ;D That was a bit low I must admit. Had to mention that so as not to hyjack the thread. ;D ;D

Iadmit I enjoy the f word! :D But I can adapt. I am going to give some of the local sports stores a call and ask them how much of an impact it would have on their business if this fishery was done away with! I am very interested in this!

It of course it is big business to them as they are doing very well with this sockeye opening as does most guide companies. This year would have been very good because of the month long opening. Many have expanded their business because of it, investing in more and bigger boats etc.. This now is one of the factors that keeps these opening going on.
Before the FVSS got these opening they got by without them but now rely on them in a big way.

I'm not so sure about that.. I work for one of the large guiding companies in the valley and we in no way ever rely on the sockeye opening for trips. As a matter of fact when we book around that time of year we don't "sell" it on sockeye. For one thing we never know when or if it will be open, so it would be rather deceptive to market a fishery that might not be available. Also, I don't know any guide that wouldn't prefer to employ "other methods" even when the sockeye are open.. we spent a number of full days bar fishing during the opening and most guides here ALWAYS switched to either bar fishing or sturgeon after the boat limit of sockeye were reached.
I bet there was no more than maybe 12 "last minute" trips we did based on the opening, and a lot of those were 1/2 days. We would be just as busy with or without the sockeye. Almost all of my coleagues bounce out of necessity, not necessarily choice. We would actually embrace a sockeye closure because lets face it, the river would remain empty compared to what it is like at the opening...
Other guiding companies however might advertise differently than us, but this is my experience.
Cheers!
-
I don't doubt your comment, but fishing at Peg during sockeye opening, I have never seen so many guide boats either across us or racing up & down to their spots. Do we see that traffic now after the fishery is closed? Have not returned to bb for springs so others may have a better observation.
One point about the goodness of the sockeye fishery is that it is a HOT fishery right in the middle of summer with gorgeous weather within 1 hr from Vancouver. It therefore allows the whole family to partake of the fishery, even camping out as a family unit. Just think about whole family sitting around camp fires, eating delicious BBQ sockeyes and watching the stars. If sockeye migrates like coho, it will be too late & summer break is over for the children. Perfect timing of a fishery. You can't say that with any other fisheries. They are either too cold, or not productive enough, or take too much skill to catch a fish, a task reserved for the pros & the eliites.
The problem of littering is universal to human nature, with or without sockeye fishery. Leadbelly, to compare Peg or people fishing at Peg to the pig farm & the butcher is really at bit too much and an apology should be owed to those fishermen. :o :(
I understand some will say this fishery is bad for kids to start and they will bring it to the smaller systems. Well, instead of shutting down the sockeye fishery, DFO should legislate leader length restriction in smaller systems. Fraser sockeye fishery should be given a special status as a 'food fishery' and bbing with longer leader allowed.

The problem is in a lot of cases in smaller systems like the Vedder they do use a short leader like you have suggested but it is combined with a float. You will notice the people have their float laying on its side and they accomplish the same thing, a flossing tactic.
In some cases the fish are holed up in smaller areas, not moving through like on the Fraser and it is just a matter of time that the line will go through their open mouth. Every year we get reports of this going on and some have reported it already on a couple of posts. More reports will come in and you will see it yourself when out on all local rivers.
Also take the time to go up to Tamihi Rapids when the main run is on and you will see this method I have described in full swing. The good thing FOC works under cover in this area and some tickets are issued for snagged fish being retained. But once one ticket is issued the cover can be broken.
Also last year during the later part of the steelhead season in the Vedder Canal area as well as the run below Lickman Road this method was used by a number of people. Two of the steelhead I got from people for the brood capture program had the hook on the outside of the mouth.
Unfortunately the sockeye opening has helped create this new fishing method on all our rivers which will be very difficult if not impossible to change now, unless anglers themselves do the changing.

Two things I would like to say in regards to this topic
#1 you are all bang on when you say it has to start at home !!! I was raised with respect and taught to be respectful of others and I would never dream of throwing my trash on the ground and expect someone else to pick it up... it has nothing to do with the type of fishermen it has ecerything to do with jerks that have a complete lack of respect for the environment and all those around them.
#2 whoever it is that says guides employ other ways of catching Sockeye first HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG thx for the laughs !!!!! this whole summer whether we were barfishing or Sturgeon fishing or bouncing for Sockeye we watched guide after guide after guide after guide set their clients up with BB gear.. we all know as a guide you have to make a living and 90% of guides will do whatever they need to to keep the clients happy.. I am not bashing anyone I am just saying what I have seen year after year on the Fraser !!
-

Thick rick, you might want to re-read my post before you laugh at it... making a point about what I said is fine if you actually understood it in the first place.
What I did say was that the guides I know would PREFER to continue bar fishing, tossing spoons, sturgeon fishing etc OVER bottom bouncing. I never said guides have a magical way of catching sockeye other than BB'ing. Yes we do bottom bounce BUT don't continue to catch and release after everyone's limit has been attained. As for other guides continuing to C&R after everyone limits, that's their choice but one I am personally against.
As far as guides doing whatever it takes to keep people happy, they do exist but aren't very respected. If you go out and bounce when it is suggested by the DFO not to or when there is enough clarity to bar fish, or catch and release dozens of sockeye, you get noticed.. at least from my experience.
Keep laughing if you will but at least understand what it is you are laughing at.
-
I undertood exactly what you were saying, you said you and fellow guides that you know would employ all methods before resorting to BB for Sockeye, then in the following sentence you said that after catching your limit of sockeye you would switch over to Bar Rigs !!!
If I was a guide I would do the same thing.. the fact is you still BB for sockeye
I have no problem with you as a guide getting clients into fish, I think it is a good thing
and I have no problem with the way you get into your fish as I partake in it a bit myself !!
I just found the way you wrote it quite funny
