So close, but still blanked for another day!
Last night I was working late to meet some deadlines, while Nina was on the airplane back to Denmark. She arrived at Frankfurt Airport at 3:00am my time, and managed to get on wireless internet through her lap top during her five hour wait for the next flight. The wonders of cyber technology! I was able to see Frankfurt Airport through her webcam. ;D We chatted for a couple of hours, and before I knew it the sun was about to rise. I decided to head down to Garry Point Park since I was awake anyways. ::)
The incoming tide was 7:00am, so I expected a good push of salmon around sunrise. Sure enough, the fish were rolling right in front of me when I arrived at 6:00am. It took four casts before one hit it really hard. The loud zing followed after I set the hook as the spool spun out of control. Several seconds later, a pop at the end of the line ended all that excitement. After almost a month of attempting to find a sockeye salmon in the Tidal Fraser River, there was finally a connection, a brief one... ::)
The school moved through until around 6:30am, then everything died when the tide turned.
The condition is fantastic right now! Water clarity is very ideal. If there is a school of fish going by, your chance of having one to attack your spoon or spinner is quite big! Today's fish went for the blue stripe spoon that I've made. ;)
Time to sharpen the hook now for tonight's or tomorrow morning's incoming tide. ;)
I took a photo of the sunrise when I arrived, but for some reason the file collapsed and I ended up with this. :P

Thanks Rick, no worries, it's all part of the game. ;) I think Nina and I just like to fly a lot... ;D The freshly arrived socks down here definitely will bite, just not as often as other salmon. ;) Just reorganized my spoons, heading out soon. ;D

Awsome pictures, Im sure youll get one soon rod,
-
Sure it wasn't a pikeminnow Rod ? ;)
-
:P
I'm pretty sure. ;)
Even more fish coming in tonight, absolutely amazing. At times I could see up to ten fish leaping out at once! Lots of fish coming in right now, which was predicted with the good test fishery result in the Upper Johnstone Strait a few days ago.
They were a bit far out tonight though... For some reason they didn't want to come near me like this morning. Must shower next time... :(
Tomorrow morning.... ;D

Just got back from bike riding along the river in Richmond. It was just high tide and there was a massive school of sockeye on the river. Fish jumping right close to shore, and as far as the eye could see. It was amazing. :) I might have to dust off the pink spinning gear and give it a try.
Rod, where I was I saw some very close to shore. Maybe I'll beat you to landing the first sockeye off Richmond this year.... ;D
-
I guess I should have stayed a bit longer tonight. ::) Seeing that they were further out at Garry Point, I drove up to No. 3 Road later and only found them to be even further out. ::) Tomorrow morning, if it stays calm like this morning, should be good. ;D

Are there any sox in the North Arm?
-
I can't find anything on the dfo dite. Is the lower fraser catch and release only?
-
redlad, the tidal Fraser River has been opened for sockeye retention since July 28th. ;) Here is the notice:

kev, they should be at north arm too during the incoming tide. I've seen them there, just never targeted them around that area. Nina did hook one a few years ago while fishing with 4lb test for peamouth chub. ;D Apparently I lost that fish too. ::)
-
Thanks Rod. I looked an looked for that notice. I am in business.
-
this afternoon I headed out to lower fraser as well, a lot of fish jumping and i saw three seals swimming not far from shore, I used plastic squid, after several cast, i saw a fish followed my lure to shore but no bite, i will try tomorrow morning with spoons.

It's good to see that people are trying to catch sox in tidal water. There are more chances to catch soxs in tidal waters. You are also allowed to keep more sox (4 per day). Less people too. I am really enjoying the sockeye fishing in tidal waters. ;)
-
I hooked a sockeye last year on a green wool bugger in the lower fraser. Didn't land it though. Gave a nice fight while it lasted.
-
Rod, is it possible to fly fish for these fish? Are there springs mixed in as well?
-
I dont see why you couldnt. Brightly colour flys. I think it about getting to them with may be difficult.
-
Don't ask me about flyfishing for them, I am having a hard time just to get one sticking on the lure. ;D

After all that time with Nina, I'm sure your hooks are all dull.. ::) Are you ripping the spoons in? I've heard that if you do it will cause more action...would be interesting to know if it really works..
