Well myself , coho cody, and silver bullet made our way to the fraser early this morning, Fishing seemed to be good early on then died off,Silver Bullet was the first to land one, it inhailed his red corkie ;) Within the first 2 hours we had 4 socks to the beach and I had my limit, and lost many more, it took an other 2.5 hours to get two more socks. At around 10:30 a fellow came walking down saying he had a spring on and landed the fish right in front of us, it loooked to be about 15-16 pounds, He quickly gilled it and bonked it on the head, Then coho cody says "thats a steelhead buddy" , the fellow was sure it was a spring, However it indeed was a chrome wild steelhead, the tail base was so thick I could not get my hand around it and it had a beautiful light pink line. Now the only problem is the man just killed a wild steelhead, He then took off and dropped the fish 80 feet back where no one could see ??? ??? ??? ??? pictures to follow
-
what an idiot to kill a steelhead. it was a doe, around 15lb.s, probably a thompson summer-run. i said imeediatley to the guy, "its a steelhead buddy". but no, he insisted it was a spring, and it went back and forth between us, its a spring, no its a steelie, its a SPRING!, no....ITS A FREAKING STEELHEAD! >:(then all three in our group said it was a steelhead and the guy was just shocked. it had a greenish head, massive square-tail, very light pink lateral line, steelhead spots, AND BLINDING CHROME.
lesson here: get to know your fish, check that it is keepable, and listen to your fellow anglers. just cause it was 2 kids telling him, doesn't mean we dont know our fish ;) :P
ALLS I CAN SAY IS WHOEVER YOU ARE, YOU BETTER BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF >:( >:( >:(
Coho Cody ;)
-
Retard. >:(
-
That sucks, Yesterday a chum was caught and released, the poor thing had 2 seal bites and net marks all over it.
-
The chums that are starting to show up now are heading for the Coquilhalla river. They should be released as that run is a small one and is
easily affected.
-
That is a damn shame. >:( I wish I had have been there!! I am still interested in seeing the pics though. Did you get any of the steely, and a pic of the guy perhaps? ???
-
Unfortunatly no pictures of the steelhead, THE GUY TOOK OFF ::)
-
That's a darn shame. But here are some useful phone numbers to keep handy. Dug them out of the Freshwater Fishing Regulations. To report all Poachers and Polluters call 1-877-952-7277. For all Salmon related violations call 1-800-465-4336.
The website for "Report All Poachers and Polluters" is rapp.bc.ca. If you see someone commit an offence these are the numbers to call.
-
That sucks.....
1.) Sucks that he kept the steelhead.
2.) Sucks that he was obviously too pridefull to listen to a couple of yound guys! (Who obviously know there fish!)
TRK,CC How long have you guy's been fishing?
-
ever since i was born ;D, but i have been fishing steadily for probobly about 5-6 years now
-
That's cool. I've just started in the last few years, but wishing I had started alot earlier! My kids will defenetly be learning alot earlier! (Even if they are girls...but that don't matter much eh? We need more females in the sport right ;)
-
forsure, ya fishing is a great sport, I hope to make it my job one day
-
You have to stand your ground, before the fish is killed, point out the features that don't make it a spring, and tell him that you'll call the police if its not immediately released...
Don't worry that you're smaller, just start kicking up a fuss - get in his face and get loud - there's no way some man is going to beat up a young guy... I hope!
At least not a girl ;)
Cheers,
Nicole

I agree with Nicole.
Based upon the report by TRK, the fish was already dead when the species came into question. At that point it's pretty much a mute argument. Either way he shouldn't have kept it, but if it was only pointed out to him after it was dead what's the guy to do? UNLESS (And this is a big unless) he knew instantly it was a steelhead and bonked, gilled it before anyone would say anything, then claim he thought it was a spring ect, then he's just an A$$hole.
But good for the two of you for speaking up, let's hope nicole is right and they're not about to start beating up a young guy!
-
Sad >:(
-
Wow cody that sucks, u should have kicked the guy in the sack! I once had a limit argument with another fisher man but because my dad was downstream and i was a kid he didn't listen until some guy came over and settled it, then he just took off with his ilegal fish! JUST BECAUSE WERE KIDS DOESN'T MEAN WERE DUMB! >:( Oh and thats great that steelhead might have made it to the thompson by next week (when i am going to be there fishing) I think this is ludacris! >:(

Well i could probobly beat up the guy lol, we was maybe 5'10 and skinny, and im 6'0,lol he took it and ran off though
-
:owow seems like alot of excitement i missed 8)
-
The guy never knew it was a steelhead, he beached it then gilled it and showed us the fish, then we said it was a steelhead, along with some other adults,
-
Excellent advices Bill. To avoid lengthy arguments, it may also be a good idea to carry fish id cards as well as relevant fishery notices with you when these situations take place again.

So what happens? Even if he agreed with you it was a steelhead, what's the guy to do after it's already dead?
Other than the fact he denied it (again after the fish is dead) what more could he have done.
If I'm not mistaken the only issue here is that he didn't Admit the species once it was already dead.
Rod: What does the regs say about this? If he honestly thought it was a spring upon killing it, then finds out it's a steelhead, what should he have done?
-
Rod maybe you can clarify this one, I was told when I bought my freshwater license that if a C/O asks you to produce a copy of the regulation and you can't it could be a $100.00 fine. Is this true or not, since being told this I always carry a copy of the regs in my vest and have a copy in my boat.
You may be subject to a fine. It's up to the discretion of the CO. He may let you off by having you produce the licence at a later date. Depends on the day he's having. Same rule as a police officer pulling you over and you can't produce your driver's licence.

I believe he was asking if you get a fine for not carrying a copy of the regs, not a fine for not having your license with you!! ;) :) I can't see getting a fine for not carrying around a copy of the regs. That would be a.... well anyhow. I could see a fine for not having your license, but one for not carrying the regs, I know that I have never carried the regs with me. Never been asked to produce a copy either. :)
-
I never carry the fishing regulations with me. Neither does my friends, brother or nephew. I have been checked on the odd occasion and have never been asked to produce the regulations.
-
Well unfortunately, if you bonk a fish that is illegal to keep you have to suffer the consequences. When we go out and fish we have a responsibility to insure we are following the regulations for the stream or lake we are fishing on. That would mean at the very least, I hope reading the regulations, and being able to identify the different fish species. So even though this person who killed the steelhead did so by mistake he still committed an offence.
Now if this individual had called Fish and Wildlife, and called himself in .....maybe the Conservation Officer would have been lenient on him.
But by running away, it is my understanding that he would face a fine, seizure of fishing gear used to catch the fish, and possible suspension of his fishing license.
-
If the fish in question is a closed species you cant keep it under any circumstance.
Doesnt matter if the fish jumped in your boat and cleaned itself, you must return it to the river.Dead or alive.
-
sad to hear that another fisherman can't tell the diff between species
-
Thats what I thought too..... if you accidently kill a fish you can't keep, it must be released back into the river.
-
That's why I asked Rod to clarify this one. I was told this when I renewed my freshwater licence and I don't plan on paying a fine if it is true
I've never heard of this, not really sure, but find it unlikely. I've been checked by both DFO officers and conservation officers over a dozen times (not sure why so many times, they can't seem to get off my back! ;D ) and have never been told to produce a copy of the regulations.
-
Never been asked to produce a reuglation book by CO or DFO, but I always carry a B.C. Freshwater regulation synopsis. It’s small and it fits nicely in my vest. I like to have it so I know which river allows retention of coho two over certain size and two under, and which river allows retention of four. Also it comes in handy if you are planning to keep chinook jacks as the allowable size differs from river to river.

Interesting question weizen. All anglers have the responsibility to be able to identify their catch. If one kills a species that is not legally retainable - one commits an offence. Period. There's no excuse for not being able to identify one's catch. Particularly if we're talking about a steelhead vs. a spring. With respect to keeping or discarding the fish after the fact? I'm not sure whether the enforcement agency would be more forgiving if one were to discard the fish afterward, or whether it would be more lenient if one "turned himself/herself in".
From a practical sense, if one were to discard the fish - but got pulled over by the authorities afterward, would there be enough evidence to charge the angler? I suppose if other witnesses were willing to come forward and go to court to testify. Otherwise, there might not be much the authorities could do from that point onwards.
What I've heard is very disturbing - but unfortunately, not surprising. Good work, those of you, who attempted to help identify the fish for this angler. We should all keep the phone number of the authorities with us and report violations as soon as possible.
