Native leaders angry at Harper vow to oppose racially divided fisheries

First nation people won't 'back off or sit back,' Grand Chief Ed John says

What an awesome idea!!!  But it wont work.  Its easier to pay off the Natives with fish , than risk rail blockades etc.  There hasnt been a government yet that has taken a stand that race has no place in how we treat fellow Canadians..

Going to be interesting whether it's all talk or whether they actually plan to do something about it.

Way to go Harper. Time to stand up to FN's pressure. It was such a joke that DFO caters to FN and appease them at every turn. It still makes me angry to remember the story last year that one native claimed he has taken 50,000 fish himself while thousands of recreational anglers were told to stay out. So much for the crap food & ceremonial fishery. Lets hope that Harper is ready to deal with defiant natives though, as the feds are scared to death about bad press in confronting FN's actions in light of the 2010 Olympics. FN knows this too well. Good luck Harper.

Good job.  Finally a PM that's willing to stand up for all Canadians. All of our ancestors came to Canada from abroad. That goes the same as FN.  Everyone should be treated equal under the Canadian law.

Ya know it is about time that this issue is taken care of. this is one of the few things i support Harper in. the racist intolerance has gone far enough. we all have the right to equal rights. section 15 of the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms states: "Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."  it is about time that held true. it is time to have a fishery that is not regulated on race. it is about time someone takes a stand for us in ottawa. the only problem is how the first nations peoples in chilliwack and the surrounding areas particularly take this message and whether or not we have another Caledonia incident or a flare up like the one betwenn the mohawk nation and the town of oka, where military involvment was needed. i can tell you i will be watching this story closely...

Watch out for road blocks and natives in military outfits. Threats and lawlessness by them always paid in the past. Why try anything else?  ;D

I'm not fond of stephen harper, however...I do approve of this action, if indeed it becomes "action". Although I support the rights of first nations to utilize this resource, I feel that a unilateral approach to regulation is an inevitable and natural progression for this issue. History has shown that treating one group differently from others only causes problems in the long run...inevitably a balance will be found, as it hasn't been balanced out thus far.

what really upsets me is the fact that we are still paying for the mistakes of the British. we are not British any more! WE ARE CANADIAN!! and damn proud of it too! it is time we fix this problem that has plauged us for decades. i just hope Harper acts on this. i am becoming skeptical if we will see any real progress within this issue in the next couple months. lets just cross our fingers and hope for the best... :-\
