Post by: THE_ROE_SLINGER on July 09, 2006, 04:35:28 PM
left rocky point around 10am, and made our way over to cates park where we dropped our crab traps. Then headed up indian arm. Today we brought our prawn trap :)... Dropped it in around 300 feet of water. We then proceded Up a little futher where we flounder fished for 2 hours. Lept 3 nice inch ones and realesed many 6-10 inches. We then made our way back and was suprised to find only one praw in our trap >:( However we had 8 keeper dungeness crab in our first and only pull :P...wil post pics later

Thanks, I want to give crabbing another try out there. Is it best to go up the Arm or stay around the outer points of Cates/Belcarra?

I have never been crabbing before. A couple questions for all of you...

1) Do you need a licence?
2) Where can I get a crab trap and what do they cost?
3) What do you bait it with?
4) Is there a limit or size restriction?
5) where do I find info on crabbing and the regs?

Thanks!!!

1. Yes - the normal tidal sport fishing license covers shellfish, including crabs.
2. Any tackle store (Berry's, Steveston Marine, Three Vets, Army & Navy, Hub Sports etc.) - $20 to the sky's the limit.
3. Anything stinky - fish parts, chicken bones, etc.
4. Yes. Min. 165 mm carapace width for dungeness crabs, and it's common practice (though not strictly required) to release all female crabs. You can get a "crab caliper" for measuring them at tackle stores. See #5 for details.
5. For licensing, gear, area & catch limits see http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/default_e.htm or the tidal waters fishing regs booklet they give you when you get your license.

Good luck & have fun!

Thanks REACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

A couple more questions...

1) when you buy a trap does it come with rope and bouy?
2) what is the average depth one is to go for when setting a trap?
3) How long do you generally need to let a trap sit for before pulling it up?

Thanks for your patients.

little more infos..

1. you shouldnt use floating rope.  you shouldnt use empty plastic bottle or chunk of styrofoam as bouy.

one of my friend was impounded about $450 for using illegal rope, buoy, trap and no nama tag. he didnt know anything about regs...

If you do use floating rope, you'll need to use weights to sink the line.

the best system I have seen for setting a trap is with a sliding bouy.  the bouy goes on your line like a drennan (thru a hole in the center), you the clip a 2 lb cannon ball onto the end of your line.  As the tide rises and falls, the bouy slides up and down the rope so there is minimal slack line that can cause a boat to get caught up in that line.

You generally leave your taps anywhere from 1-2 hours, if you crabbing from a dock 30-45 mins.
