Title: Tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys
Post by: gofish on July 04, 2006, 03:05:00 PM
Just got back from 7 days of fun in the Florida Keys flyfishing for Tarpon. Saw tons of permit, bonefish, turtles, dolphins, rays, barracudas, and always a shark or 2 circling the boat, just checking us out. The guide told us not to fall overboard when the bull sharks or hammerheads were around, but "not to worry" if they were just the 6-7 ft nurse, lemon, spinner, or black tip sharks- ok!  Went with the boys from Sea-Run in Coquitlam, a class act all the way. Can't wait to go back next year!

We were launching on a about 20 miles from Key West. It was a 40 minute boat ride every morning out to these little islands in the middle of nowhere. We also fished closer to town right near the bridge they blew up in that Arnie movie "True Lies".  It was weird to see abandoned boats EVERYWHERE washed up on the shorelines, some up to 1/4 mile inland all from the big hurricanes they had last year.
And yes, my wife is starting to wonder if I fancy fish more than her. I told her not to ask questions she wouldnt like the answers to  ;)

Now that's fishing! ARe the tarpon released, or can some be retained for foods? How long can they be out of the water? They seem stronger than the average fish.....
