I plan to smoke some salmon, vacuum seal it, and put it on an airplane for 15 hours. I guess I should put dry ice in? Where do you buy dry ice? How much do I need? What kind on packaging do I need? Will the airline company open the package? How long will the smoked salmon last? Feel free to give me any advice. Thanks.

Look up a place called Pack N Ship the owners name is Carey Ward and he is an old friend of mine, I know he specializes in stuff like this and he uses Dry Ice

If it's smoked it is cured(depending on ammount of time in brine etc.). Generally smoked salmon is just fine to be out that long in your luggage when vacuum sealed...
"Fresh"/frozen fish is a whole other story.

You won't be able to ship anything containing Dry Ice-it ain't gonna happen. >:(
Best you can do is vacuum pack it, then freeze it then wrap a space blanket around it and vacuum pack that.
It's not the Airline you have to worry about-your bags will be X rayed @ the airport and you're good to go.
Customs @ the other end may/may not want to know what you're bringing in-especially Australia-Euros know smoked fish can't carry any diseases.
Dunno about Asian countries.

If it is well brined with salt, dry smoked and not the consitency of raw bacon, you could wrap in wax paper and put in paper bag. Put that in a box that won't get squished. If it's that mushy kind of bareley smoked cold salmon, why bring it.

Salmon shop on Granville Island told me that if you freeze cold smoked salmon, wrap it in newspaper tightly with small ice packs inside a very snug fitting box, it's good for about 12 hours. Imagine it could last longer if you had more insulation and ice packs. That's how they pack theirs to ship.

not sure where you get your info but it isn't accurate.. Dry ice is still commonly used for shipping perishable items !!!!!!

Rick-some friends of mine just flew back from Baja and were told by Alaska Air that under no circumstances were they allowed to use Dry Ice to keep their fish frozen.
Of course that's the problem with trying to get info out of Airline Companies-one person says one thing one says another both hoping to cover their my friend*s who knows what the real story is. ::)

hmmmmm... thats interesting for sure.. I know Pack N Ship still uses it to ship their frozen products.. in fact two weeks ago they actually shipped two buckets of ice cream to Europe for some rich chick !!!!! apparantly our icecream is that much better lol

Do what I do. Froze your smoked salmon (in freezer -20C or more). for 2 days use those flexible coolers. A layer of ice pac then smoke salmon then on top another layer of ice pac. And after 15 hours your smoked salmon is still frozen. (provided majority part of your 15 hour travel is flight. cargo area on the plane is about -20 to -30c in the air)
