Title: Ucluelet Late June
Post by: joshuag232 on June 21, 2006, 10:51:42 PM
I need to make this quick since i have school tomorrw. Took the ferry over to victoria and drove over to ucluelet. Stayed at taucau laya resort with some family and friends. We went out on the charter boat the second day. We went out 25 miles off shore(which took 2 hours) and jigged for hallies. We limited out hours(a dozen fish) ranginf from 18 to 35 pounds. We also managed to pick up a nice lingcod of around 15 lb and two smaller ones as well as 2 turbot. We then went in closer and trolled for some springs. first fish on and one of the younger kids brings it in. Its boa 7lb spring which we bonk. Next fish i was supposed to bring in but i was too seasick at the time so the same girl brought it in. It was a 12 lber. After that are time was basically up (10 hours lol) and we head back in and pull up the crab trap. It feels very heavy and all thats in it are 2 huge sunflower starfish and some bullkelp and a undersize redrock. we bait it with a fresh hallibut carcass and head in to the harbour for pictures and to clean the fish. Our capn kindly filleted them for us. After the trip i get some sea sick medicine and prepare for the next day. We get up bright and early and decide to start off with salmon. We troll around and we hook some undersize springs 2 - 3 pounds and some nice wild silvers we culdnt keep. Finally there is some bites and its my turn to catch the fish and i reel it in and its a hatch silver. Finally something we could keep. The next fish hits pretty solid and the captain said i could reel it in because the younger kids couldnt handle it and the adults where letting the kids get the salmon since they culdnt get hallies. It almost strips all the line and after a 20 minute batte a 23 lb spring is netted. We bonk it and keep fishing. The next fish is a 12 lber that my 7 year old cusin brought in. He was very happy. After a while we got some more wild silvers and some small springs. We decided not to go halli fishing this day because it takes too long to get out there. Instead we went up close to a rocky reef and tried for some rockcod. The action was pretty much non stop. the bulk of the catch was black rockcod and there were 2 canaries, one kelp rock cod and one china rock cod. We fed the china rock to a hungry eagle. We tossed it out onto the water and an eagle comes and scoops it out with its talons 10 feet in front of us :o boy was that a sight. After that we go and pull up the crab trap and it contains 2legal dungies and a legal redrock. we go back to the harbour and our captain cleans the fish for us and we thank him for everything and we pack all the fish in coolers and we leave. After a long drive and a long ferry ride and a short drive home here i am writeing this. I am still swaying and i still feel like i am on the boat.

heres just a few pics..enjoy

Isn't it also called Plaice?

No, plaice, turbot, starry flounder are all righteye flounders that fall in the same family but are individual species. The idifferences fall in body size, shape, size of mouth, colouration, etc.

Flatfishes are divided into 11 families, you can read them here:

In my fishing on the westcoast i have never heard of them around here. Hear people call them that sometimes in England. Is that a nickname for another species or do turbot actually live around here?

It's quite interesting that people take pictures of the reverse side of flatfish here in Canada. :)

Nice report and pics, Joshua.

The nice brown colour blends in with the usually wet docks so therefore the white shows up a little better.  Good point though overall

Look at all the halibut!! Yum Yum. I'd take them over salmon any day.
