Title: Sturgeon Fishing
Post by: BigFisher on June 21, 2006, 02:21:38 PM
I wanna try some sturgeon fishing, I figure from what iv read on this forum and others that the Penn 330 GTI is a good overal reel. For a rod Ill try and find a used heavy duty one. But what im not sure about is how they are fished?. Are they fished the same way as bar fishing, keeping your bait stationary and wait?. Iv seen the sturgeon setup, from a couple of pictures Rodney has previously left on the site. Since I have no clue where to chuck my gear out, I figure I can scope out some guides and follow them up to the spots. Some Info would be great!

If your fishing from shore, find a rod rod 10-12 feet in length.  Boat rods, I like 8-8 1/2 ft rods but something shorter will do.  I use a Penn 320.  Fill it up with 100 pound braid.  I use 130# for leaders and generally 7/0 hooks unless Im fishing with smaller baits like eels, worms etc.  Get yourself an assortment of wedge weights from 10-18 oz or so.  Some heavy duty swivels and snap swivels. I usually use a few large salmon beads as a bumper against the barrel swivel.  I usually use a 2-3 fooot leader again depnding on my bait.

Hope this helps

Yes, I plan to fish from a boat. So just drop a line off the boat and wait, if theres no nibbles just move on to another spot? Everyone one knows fishing comes first, then exams. :) Im glad im all done with school for now ;D

Go to your local shop, they can hook you up with all the info. Riverside has done a sturgeon course in the past and we currently have a sale on Penn combos. Penn Slammer rod with a 330 reel all for $197.99
