Title: Well, I don't need a rod Holder for Barfing anymore!! I hope!!
Post by: Big Steel on June 12, 2006, 05:38:31 PM
So I was a bit bored at work today, and I had been thinking about getting a bar rod holder for quite a while, but I didn't want to spend the money on it!! ::)  So, I looked through the scrap bin and came up with an idea!!  That idea truned into this!! :)

I would think that should do the trick, but if I by anychance over looked something, let me know before I go and do the finishing!! ;D

Very nice. The only thing I would suggest is that if you haven't already, sharpen the other end so it's easier to dig into the gravel.

Now I was thinking of a rubber dip of some sort, or say a custom paint job or something!!  Whatever I do, I willl post it when it is done!!  Think I might do some stenciling or something!!  What do you guys think would be a good name for it, you know, since us guys seem to name everything anyways!!  I have a few ideas, what do you guys say?? ;)

Looks good but how about a horizontal bar near the bottom so you can stomp it  into the ground like a shovel

I was going to weld one of those on, but I took into consideration the kind of ground that I would be putting it into most of the time and figured that I would need to use a big rock or a hammer anyways, so I left it off!!!  Now I just have to have the river come into shape and get out there and try it!! ;D

Big Steel now you are all set. You have your self a new Ugly Stick bar rod & holder. If you need any big snaps or nice size swivels drop me a line and can arrange that for you also. Oh ya Jason forgot to pick up Thick Ricks rod but  I'm going to get him to pick it up before he leaves for work in the morning. ;D

Well, I think that I might have to do some adjusments as I sit here looking at the holder and thinking about how it will work, but....  I still have to get out onb the water to give it a try!!!

Griz, I will stop in at Jason's on my way home tomorrow, if it is there, then I will get it!!  If not, then I will try again the next day!!  I will let you know on the other gear, I think that I have everything except weights!!  But we will see, I think that I will need to pick up some 14-18 oz ones!! ;) :)

It is 4" shy of 4 feet!!  44" long!!  I wanted to make it a bit longer, because I can always shorten it if need be!! ;) ;D

And a NO, it will not be receiving a Make Me Laughs Logo!! :D  I do want to catch a fish on it you know, and well, that would be a really big jinx on it right off the bat!! ;D ;D  I think that I will give it a paint job and airbrush a name on there!!  Should look pretty good!!  If you ask why would I do that, it is just going to get all sraped up anyways?  I would answer, because that is just the kind of guy I am, besides, I doubt anyone out there will have a fancy smancy airbrushed rod holder!!  What can I say, I like to be a bit different!! :o :-[ ;D ;D

It will not be too long as some time in some spots you have to put your rod out a ways in the water and also if you fish down in the Bowman's area the water can come up 3 feet on a high tide.

Also a tall holder helps by keeping your rod higher hence it keeps more line out of the water preventings a drag on the line. This can then lessen the amount of weight you have to use to hold your glow in place.

Well, Chris, you know, watching the unexpected catch video that Rodney put up a while back, helped out a bit as well!!  From that, when I saw you running into the water to grab the Rod, I said to myself, " well, then I should take into consideration that I may have to place the holder in the water at times." Thus I made it about a 1 and a half longer than I was going to !! ;) :)

Personally, I like the rod holder that keeps my expensive rod and reel off the dirt, out of the water, has a beer can holder etc.
When you get those light taps of smaller salmon a more horizontal holder is the ticket to success. You can use a stick for a rod holder(my usual).

The type you mention are fine in the lower reaches of the Fraser but here we need ones like BIg Steel has built as we use heaver gear all around. Of course as well the fish are bigger up here and they would just pull your whole outfit in and continue heading upstream. ;D ;D

Hey Big Steel, I would recommend some sort of shock absorbing material at the top end of the holder.  I made one very similar to that one and when I got a big spring on it SNAP!!!!! went my rod.  I would think that if you were to use "Tool Dip" several times on it would be sufficient. Also by using the tool dip it won't scratch up your rod when in use. I am pretty sure that you can purchase it at any local hardware store.

Hope this helps

I have one of those as well, a custom made dealy!!  It is stainless steel as the lower tends to have some salt water going on!! ;D
But I made this one for the Upper fraser, so as Chris said, it needs to be tough!! :)

I thought of that as well, but I have a rather long handle on My rod with an extension, so it sits perfect right on the foam handle!!  But if I need to do something like that later I will!!  Also, all of the edges on it have been nicely rounded, and it am prepping it for a custom paint job, you know, cause I have so much spare time on my hands!!  Besides, it will be one of a kind, making it tougher for those with sticky hands!! :o ;D

Like to buy something like this that leaves "one hand free" while I fish. Essentially you are the rod holder, which is pretty nifty all in itself. Looks like there still trying to hook someone into paying for the production.

As attorney for the inventor of the innovative Fishing Rod Holder we are currently seeking manufacturing companies to license, purchase patent rights or enter into a royalty agreement for this timely invention.

The Fishing Rod Holder has a harness with straps, a body pad , and a fishing rod holder. The harness member is comprised of a waist strap and a bandoleer-like shoulder strap, each having buckle elements for adjusting the fit to the user. The fishing rod holder is comprised of a U-shaped tube-like element having apertures whereby the fishing rod holder can be securely fastened to the body pad using appropriate fasteners.

Objects of the present invention:

provide a tool that increases a user's comfort while sport-fishing

provide a tool that is managed with a single hand leaving the user with a hand free

provide a fishing rod holder which can aid the physically challenged as well as the sportsman in securing a fishing rod to a user wearable holder

provide a fishing rod holder that can be adjusted to accommodate right and left handed users

provide a fishing rod holder that can adjust to the varying heights and weights of various users

Or build yourself this sweet system..................................Jed "clampit on ya".. Bodine style

OK so, here is an update, not like anyone cares really, I am just bored and felt like being a post whore!!!   ;D ;D

So upon doing some more thinking aout things said on this thread, I figured that I needed to do some mods to get the buggar to stick in the ground a bit easier!!  I don't want to hit it with a sledge, or rock or anything, so I made a sharpened steel rod, re-cut and angled the bottom and welded in the "stake".  This should allow for easier insertion in the afformentioned ground!! ;D  But, I left it at work tonight as the primer was still wet!!  I may also do some more welding and grinding to me it look a bit better!!  Anywho, enough said for now, I will perhaps post some more pics of the revised model!!  It, looks nothing llike the bare bones one from earlier this week!! :D  Yeah, I know I'm a bit weird!!  But I am betting it will be the swankiest bar rod holder out there!!  Might not work, but it sure will look the part!! ;D ;D

Looking the part is very important BS. ;D Look at all the people with their Sage rods, Islander reels, breathable waders and top name fishing jackets out on the river that doesn't have a clue what they're doing.  ???
