Thinking of making a crappie derby sometime at the beginning of may. It would be anywhere in the lowermainland, and weigh in could be sometime in the late afternoon?. Would any of you guys attend?
-
I've never caught a crappie, but it sounds like FUN! :) Hopefully I could get a few pointers from the Experts to get me started... Can you flyfish for crappies?

Yes you can flyfish for crappie, the only two places i have caught crappie on a fly were at whonnuck lake and sturgeon slough. Using small green micro leeches. That can be really succsessful at whonnuck lake.
-
I have never been crappie fishing either, but I have always wanted to try it. Can't think of a better time to start! I'm all in! :)
-
I wouldn't mind taking a "CRAPPIE" in the afternoon.. ;D ;D it would have to be a sunday for me to attend however... but yeah sounds good!!
-
If you're going to put on a crappie derby, make sure it is not crappy otherwise people get crabby. ;)
-
A fishin would probably be more appropriate than a derby.

I did not know that there was decent crappy fishing around the lowermainland. Did alot of crappy fishing back in Ontario and we would catch bucket fulls of those things, they are slowly taking over alot of the lakes back there. A few weeks back a friend in Ontario was ice fishing for them and caught over 20 and he said some of them were almost as big as dinner plates! they are great eating from the lakes back there andits easy to catch enough for a meal. We also used to refer to them as calico's, or calico bass.

Lucky there are actually some good Crappie lakes around the lower mainland. Whonnock and Hatzic are the best I have found. Not quite what it use to be though; 20 years ago I rarely saw another angler on Whonnock on warm August evenings. In those days I could net dinner for 6 big eaters, for two hours effort with a dry fly.
-
Danny, set up a day for Whonnock then, it would be fun to catch some crappies. April 30th?
-
been at Hatzic few weeks ago. The water was really low, dark and really smelling. Would not try to catch anything from that lake again.
-
Is there dock to fish from at Whonnock? Or boat is required to reach good fishing spot? Thank you
-
no motors are allowed at Whonnock, only oars. I think any type of floatation would be required to get you to the fishing spots. Google shows they have two small docks.

So is going to happen or what?
