I was walking my dog on the river today and then saw some movement in the water, and naturally just sat there watching the water, and to my big surprise, it was a little miniature lobster, maybe 6 inches long? Has anyone seen or heard of a lobster capable of living in a freshwater river? I've been googling for the last hour and couldn't find any answers.

Damien, fishing is a ongoing learning process just like anything else. If I were to assume that all the information is already known by everyone, then this website would not have been started in the first place.

Freshwater crayfish is a very good indicator of how clean water is . They are very sensitive to pollution.

Rodney, I agree, 100%. And i am not here to argue. I am of the opinion that this example transcends fishing. Its like seeing a raccoon and then saying " I didnt know we had koalas here". On an open forum.

Crayfish looks very much like lobsters, much more so than shrimp or prawns for example. If you don't know about crayfish but do know about lobsters it seems a reasonable question to ask.

--before getting a lecture yes I know lobster.. salt water... 1/2 the family is from Nova Scotia. Had lobster last night and always a concern about where purchased as often substituted with fresh water farmed crayfish... and called lobster

That must have been lobster meat.
Tails are totally different colour.
But I know what you mean.
If you buy crayfish from a fish store they usually come from down south ('merica) and they look more like large ghost shrimp.

Good attitude. I would guess there are MANY people that have mistaken crayfish for lobsters in our local rivers and lakes. I had no idea there were crayfish locally until I saw some in the Stave one year and did a little googling.

We were at the Harrison swimming the other day and my kids found a dead crawdad on the rocks, it took me a bit to get them to swim again once they knew there was lobsters in the river. Good thing I didn't point out the 7 foot Sturgeon that was swimming around that area.

Lol, I don't think your kids would ever go swimming again if you had done that.

I've tried them at some buffet place while vacationing in the states..good eating, but not too much meat on them, mostly concentrated at the tail. Need to get at least a few to make a good meal.

We use to swim rivers with small lunch boxes and dive for them. Flip the largest rocks you can and catch them by hand and throw them in the lunch bag.
They taste much better than crab or lobster IMO. Boil them in salted water until they turn red and scream. Normally it takes about 5 minutes. Most of the meat is in the tails, but you can also eat the claws on larger ones.
Best places for them that I've seen on the mainland are Jones lake and the lower Vedder River. You can keep 25 per person which is more than enough for a good side to a meal (they went well with pasta). You typically get as much meat as you would in a prawn tail.

When I was a little girl my dad found one in a stream at Deer Lake in Burnaby, and I kept it as a pet for a while.
I put the crayfish in the same tank with a couple dozen teeny tiny fish that the adults caught for me. The next morning all the fish were gone. >:(

The stream that goes between Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake has lots of crayfish.

I've seen crayfish in nearly every local body of water - Alouette, Stave, even Lafarge

I toss in my crayfish traps in the late evening in the creek beside my house here on the island, with any luck I will have enough for a full meal by morning, sometimes more, boiled or steamed up ,then dip in garlic butter...................YUMMY!!, great with pasta, or stir fried in black bean sauce :)

I used to eat them once in awhile. Quite tasty I think. Especially considering how ugly they are. :P

When I was 19 I was on the ferry to go camping on the island, back when ferries were 'somewhat' affordable.
Out the window I see some dolphins/porpoises jumping and turn to a friend and ask "Do we have dolphins here?" Apparently we do, but in my defence when you see them on TV it's usually Florida or somewhere tropical and I was 19 years old.
So my friend says "I don't know...I guess so"
But another friend who is very sure of himself overhears us and yells out "Those aren't dolphins! Those are salmon!"
"Umm...I don't think those--" But it was too late.
Several tourists overheard him point out the pod of jumping "salmon" and immediately started taking pictures and calling the kids "Joey! Joey come here! Look at the salmon" There had to be 30 people at the window to see the "salmon" in under a minute.
I can say with quite a bit of certainty that if they were salmon they were the biggest salmon the ocean has ever seen, they had crazy pointed dorsal fins and really pointy noses.

There was one near Broadway & Main St but it went broke-the people who ran it had No Clue.

There was in Richmond that only lasted a year or 2 as well. Crawfish King I think it was called. From review seemed food was ok but service was terrible.

I hear you, DeafGuy. When I first moved to Vancouver many years ago from the interior, I saw a guy with what appeared to be a 2 foot long shark in his catch bucket at Jericho Pier. "Holy frick there are sharks in the water" ran through my head. While technically correct - I'm sure I would have received some heckles for asking about it here - as local fishermen are very familiar with Dogfish.
If you are wondering what it was, you can guarantee there are many more that do too.
I've been on a lot of local rivers, streams, creeks, and have only come across one. Cool little Signal Crayfish that came across the creek to check me out.
