Hook size for rainbows
« on: June 03, 2005, 09:06:24 AM »

Hi.  I'm fishing for rainbows in the foot-long range or so.  Getting plenty of bites (float fishing), but having difficulty setting the hook.  It seems that when I go to set the hook, it is coming out of the fish's mouth.  I'm using size 10 hooks with shrimp as bait.  I'm beginning to think that the hooks are so small that even with a small piece of shrimp, not enough of the point of the hook is sticking out to properly hook the fish.

Does this make sense?  Should I be using a slightly larger hook for fish of this size?

Thanks.

For the local stocked trout I like to use a size 8 hook, and I find that small garden worms work the best, try sliding the worm on the hook like you would put on a sock, a small peice will do, that way the fish can get his mouth around the hook and you can get a better hookset.

I floated for Steelhead in Ont for many years....always used #16 laser sharps..weather it was single egg, rowe bag...or red wigglers......just my experience... 8)
