One thread got me thinking. How many people actually pack a pen around on the river? I dont think I ever have, other then the one in my bar fishing tackle box. Be honest. ;)
-
I actually do. I've had to lend it to quite a few people when reminding them they have to mark a retained chinook.
I was barfishing while there was the slot size restriction. My uncle and I were the only people on a bar of about fifteen that had a tape measure with them.
-
never to this day have i had a pen on me, or any where near me when fishing, im fishing but now i am planning on having a pen or two tucked away in the vest/barfing box.
-
Yes I carry both a pen and tape measure in my vest and an extra pen in my car.
-
yea I carry one
-
not usually
-
Pen and measure in the vest... always.
Backup pen and measure in my day pack... always.
-
Yup, mini tape measure, key chain style and two pens at all times. Why doesn't everyone ?, it's not like it takes up too much room ::)
-
I always carry a pen and a small tape measure....

Yep me too and I always check to make sure my pen works as well.
-
My last outing. Nope I did not. I didnt need to as I had no intention of retaining a spring.
-
Not this last time...so we ended up writing in my licence with a stick in fish blood and it worked!! Better than nothing right? :)
-
you should always carry a pen...not just for fishing, but for jotting down licenses of violators.
i've heard of people getting ticketed for not having pens especially during steelhead season, so better to get into the habit of carrying at least one at all times.

You got to be kidding. What regulations are they breaking ? Why do you need to carry a pen if you're practicing catch and release during steelhead season ?
-
Space pen in the wader. Write upside down in a vaccum if ever required.

no, i'm not kidding, i heard about it through a police friend of mine...obviously there were incriminating circumstances behind it (something along the lines of a dead steely in the vicinity of the fisherman and his denial of ownership).

I pack a pen, although one time it was not long operational when i bonked a spring but you could see my indents on my license from trying to mark down.
-
Pen, pencil (in case the pen don't work) and measuring tape.
Wish I had used them more often this summer... ;)
-
It's like the old American Express card commercial "Don't leave home without it'
-
Two pens. In the backpack. Always.
-
I try to carry a pen in my pocket and one in the backpack. Weather changes and jacket changes and oops, no pen.
Typical weather when I need to record a fish is pouring rain and the pen won't work. I would like to see actual tags as used for deer, even better, locking tags like we had years ago.
-
I carry two, one of which is a felt tip...they are less affected by cold and periods of non use (unlike a ball point).
But hey, if I wasn't planning on retaining a fish that needs to be recorded, maybe I wouldn't be so careful?!?
-
pen in each tacklebox and vest that requires marking of a fish on my licence, if I intend on keeping it.
-
Yes - I carry a pen with me. Every spring or hatch steelie that I've retained has been written down on the license immediately. Retained a chrome bullet spring back in late Sept and the pen got wet which made writing pretty interesting. I managed to get the info down - barely legible - but hey, at least I wrote it down immediately. :)
-
I even carry a small garbage bag to put fish in or clean up with. Small scale too, that always weighs the fish heavier than it is. Toilet paper too, and a small shovel. :)
-
Besides my 2 pens and tape measure, I've got 2 black garbage bags{garbage, fish} and 2 X-large zip locks{roe, etc}at all times. If your standing on the river bank fishing the day away and you can't pick up even a little amount of the garbage in your area, I don't think you should even be on the flow IMO. If more anglers did this, we wouldn't have nearly the amount of crap lying around. I'm not talking about the big stuff, just the plastic bags, line, wrappers etc.we've got some incredible rivers here , lets keep it that way :)
-
Ya, I carry pens. I buy velcro so I can stick them on the dash of the boat so they have a safe place and do not bounce around the boat.
I actually have a velcro addiction. It is everywhere in my life keeping me organized and prepared in many ways.
I don't carry a pen on the river because I do not take fish from rivers. I to take a camera to take pictures of fish and license plates etc. if I feel the need.
-
Don't know if it has been mentioned but I think that you can mark you licence with a sharpened tip of a piece of pencil lead.

Regulations state that a pen must be used.

In never leave home without a pen, the wife thinks I am a little OCD about it. ;D
