that's like 20 $ worth of lures right there. Somebody I think on this forum had heavy line that he would throw over branches and retrieve all that crap.

I‘ve seen pelicans and a goose that drowned by getting tangled in fishing line, as well as finding fish that been tethered by unsafe rigs.  Down in Florida those ibises are always getting in trouble hanging around the piers trying to steal bait.  I hate all litter, but line is the worst because it just doesn‘t go away.

I'm not sure how you're supposed to retrieve your garbage from 30' up a tree when you snag a branch and break off.

I know those trees that the line and other gear was caught in and once your gear hits those branchs, good luck getting it back. Things have been caught up in those trees since I was a kid and I am now in my 40's.

im sure anyone would not want to lose $20 bucks gear but sometimes it's not retrievable

I always use smaller test leaders so if I do get a snag it's only a couple of feet if line. And due to lure cost I do anything in my power to retrieve it. Also ppl who can't cast should not cast near trees. Plan ahead just in case it snags up whether u can reach that location or not

I know i have left line and hook in a tree a time or two and nothing short of climbing the tree or chopping it down is going to get that stuff back.

I think a tree cast has happened to pretty much every fisherman once or twice in their life, just sad to see that this is the outcome of this lost gear.

BTW I'd like to know how the OP would have retrieved this gear if it had been his.

People need to learn a variety of casting techniques, most times big looping overhead casts anywhere near trees means lost gear and line. Especially when twenty-five pound mainline is tied straight to the lure.

A good reminder to come to the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society's cleanup on July 14, our second of the year. We collect all sorts of garbage left by many inluding balls of line that gets caught up in shore birds too. I have seen it at least three times over the years.
