REGAN PRESENTS 2005 RECREATIONAL
FISHERIES AWARDS TO FIVE RECIPIENTS

OTTAWA – The Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today presented the Recreational Fisheries Awards to this year’s winners. Two organizations, one association, and two individuals were recognized for their hard work and dedication in developing and enhancing the recreational fishing experience throughout Canada. Their efforts to protect fisheries and their habitat, as well as promote tourism and economic activities were also recognized.

“By fishing responsibly, protecting and restoring fish habitat, and by putting conservation first, these Canadians are playing an important role in the future of our fisheries,” said Minister Regan.

The ceremony to award the 2005 winners took place on Parliament Hill. Minister Regan presented each winner with a pewter medallion, made by the Canadian Mint, and a framed Certificate of Merit to commemorate their achievements. The 2005 award recipients are:

The British Columbia Federation of Drift Fishers, New Westminster, British Columbia

Long Point Bay Anglers Association, Simcoe, Ontario

Moose Jaw Wildlife Federation, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Dean O’Toole, Sussex, New Brunswick

John Wright, Squamish, British Columbia

“While government has an important role to play in protecting and enhancing our fish and fish habitat, we couldn’t do it without the thousands of volunteers who translate their passion for fishing into action,” said Minister Regan.

The annual Recreational Fisheries Awards program was created in 1989 by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in recognition of the outstanding efforts of individuals or groups working to ensure that Canada’s recreational fishery remains strong and abundant.

DFO invites the public to submit nominations for the 2006 Recreational Fisheries Awards. Any individual, group, business or association is eligible to receive the award and can be nominated at any time during the year by an individual or organization, and a co-sponsor. Details about the nomination process can be found at http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/rfa-ppr/process-processus_e.htm
