2014's Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley catchable rainbow trout stocking starts today, March 13th. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/gofishbc/index.html), is responsible for stockings of these fish between March and June, September and November, so fishing is expected to be excellent during these months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.
As usual, we will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html).

Before heading out, please be aware of the followings:
- You must have a valid BC freshwater angling license (http://www.fishing.gov.bc.ca).
- You are permitted to keep four trout in Region 2 lakes, unless stated otherwise in lake-specific regulations. Lafarge, Como, Green Timbers, Deer, Rice, Mill Lake now have a two fish per day limit!
- If fishing from shore, only ONE fishing rod/line is permitted for each angler.
- If fishing alone in a boat, an angler is allowed to use TWO fishing rods/lines.
- Only ONE hook is allowed on each fishing line.
- There are exceptions/specific regulations for some lakes (such as catch and release only, requirement of barbless hook, boating restrictions), please see the table in Region Two's regulations (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/) where each lake is listed for exceptions.
- If you witness a violation, please phone 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) and report it.

Are treble hooks allowed on lakes ? Can't find any reference in the regulations.
-
For lakes in Region 2, treble and barbed hooks are allowed unless it specifically states that you must use a single barbless hook for the lake where you are fishing (eg. single barbless for Alta Lake, Florence Lake, Morgan Lake, etc).

Nice. We were watching you floating around the west side of the lake around 1pm, when the rain started coming down for awhile. It seemed a bit slow, I would have expected more active fish by today. This first batch of fish was the best looking, healthiest fish I've seen compared to all other year's early stockings. They went into the lake, didn't go belly up at all, recovered almost immediately and swam away into the deeper water.
The otter definitely did not go hungry today... It ate two while we were standing there watching...
-
Are they ever going to stock Trout Lake in Vancouver again or??
-
Are they ever going to stock Trout Lake in Vancouver again or??
Lol probly not...
-
Why not? Those folks living in Vancouver with their expensive homes pay the most property taxes, dont' they deserve some perks from the gov in return? LOL. ;D
-
Fishing in Vancouver's Trout lake is like Fishing with Feces. A few mysterious sources of sewage is contaminating it and nobody wants to spend any money to stop it and and cleaning it up. There is a bike lane there though so it's all good. :)
-
The fish have been pretty tight lipped compared to previous stockings.
Tried Lafarge the evening of the 13th, one light nibble.
Lafarge and Como for a total 4.5 hours the next day, saw some jumpers, nobody was getting any fish.
Spent the morning at Green Timbers today, one very light nibble between 4 of us fishing on the far side(which is usually very productive)
Saw a couple taken on the fly and a couple on a croc further up the lake, but it has been overall slow.
Will see how first light tomorrow works out :)
-
Was at Sasamat Lake last Wednesday and it had not been stocked since last year and caught 6 in about 2hrs. Decent size fish as well, all on a spoon.
Hoping to make it to Rice Lake later this week.
-
Got my 2 fish from Rick Lake this morning. On one side of the lake the fish were just hugging the bottom. On the other side, they were rolling. I've seen the reverse of this happening too, in my previous trips.
-
It was cold and wet early afternoon at lafarge but I managed to pull out two trout with krill on a small float.
Nice to catch something again and hey tasted alright seasoned, buttered and baked. Hopefully I don't grow an extra appendange.
-
I've been meaning to hit Lafarge, I heard carp are suppose to be worth fishing around this time of the year. I am waiting to see if Mike Lake will be ready to fish soon.
-
another fishless morning at lafarge, and another fishless evening at como.
lots of risers, they just weren't having it.
felt like i was hunting cutties :-\
-
what were you using for bait \ lure?
they didn't take on krill dyed red but did hit the krill dyed yellow and I saw someone else catch one using yellow dough too.
maybe this is a brood attracted to yellow or just easy for them to find yellow given the water clarity. also noticed lots of fall foliage \debris floating about so yellow may stand out. the one trout's stomach contained quite a bit of pine bristles and other debris from vegetation along with my yellow krill.
-
tried chartreuse, lime, and pink powerbaits in different color combinations, as well as 6 different panther martin spinners(very small sizes) and some 3/16 crocs.
all of the top producers from previous stockings. just an unlucky few days.
might be time to put a worm under a float.
-
It should be good later this week when they realize they are hungry and need to eat! Also, it seems like on the fly, the fish are biting more than gear. I've tried Lafarge twice now on the fly and got 2 each time with lots more bites too.
-
Anyone know if Mill Lake has been stocked? I couldn't get any info on it so I assume they haven't stocked it yet. For fishing for these trout, is it better to float fish or bottom fish or is that just personal preference? I assume float fishing on a calm day and bottom fishing on a windy day?
-
I always found it depended on the temp of the water and time of day. Aside from the trout has anyone tried carp fishing yet at Lafarge or it still to early?
-
Worms under a float was the ticket this weekend for my brother. We had a set up were he was fishing worms and I was fishing single eggs and balanced leeches under A float. The worms were the only thing that was working.
-

I never found Lafarge good for Carp fishing plus it would be too early right now. Go to Sturgeon Slough you'll catch carp there for sure. Go around May, June.

How big of a leader? I've tried float fishing once but I don't know what size the leader should be for these lakes.
-
When ever I fish Rice or any of the other urban lakes, I've always used 4 or 6lb test. I like to use 4lb on sunny days and 6lb on cloudy/rainy days.
Tight Lines
-
How big of a leader? I've tried float fishing once but I don't know what size the leader should be for these lakes.
From my swivel to the hook it is around 2 feet wit a split shot above the hook And A small sensitive float. For the fish they stock you don't need to over think it just make sure you use a light line.
-
Thanks, is the split shot above the hook or the swivel? And from float to swivel what would the distance be?
-

The last time I was at Sturgeon Slough there was a huge carp idly swimming less than 6 feet from me. I only had Bass lures with me that day and was kicking myself. I'd say that was probably June last year.
-
When they stocked rice the other day i was trying little leeches on the fly and also some small spoons on the fly (dick nites) both with 7 feet of sinking tip plus few foot leader. Couldnt get a bite even. Tried a worm under a bobber bout 5 foot depth and i hooked into two trout within a 2 hour span. Within 3 hours of the stocking taken place. All fly rod lol. Worms under an indicater :)
Do you just toss your flies from the platform there, or did you find spots around the lake with adequate casting room?
-
How was the fishing today Aaron?
-
Got my limit today :) was teaching the gf to fish too :P. Was a good day. Some people near by me fishing got about 12 in 2 hours. Destroying them.
Leech or worms ?
-
Others did well on leeches but i couldnt figure out how to use them effectively with a spinning rod as the fish are very far out in the lake where a fly rod wouldnt reach. I was having success with red wedding bands but only during the afternoon.
You could have attached a piece of weight, either a clear water fillable bubble float, or lead, and then attach a 4 to 5 foot leader to the leech or any fly with your spin rod. There are some youtube videos showing that setup.
-
Guys out at Mill lake often use power bait pellets.
Years ago in the Columbia River in Castlegar, we used to come off the snap swivel with 8-12" of leader to the 3/4 - 1 oz of lead weight and then off the swivel eye a 4-6' leader to a size 4 baitholder hook baited with two miniature marshmellows and 4-6 maggots. Cast out to a seam and let it hang up on the bottom. The marshmellows float so it keeps the baited hook off the bottom. Prop the rod in a pile of rocks and snug up the line to a small bend in the line. Fish takes the bait and you see the rod tip jumping.
-
If you want to attract freshly stocked pellet fish to your bait. Cast out then throw the occasional handful of pea gravel in the vicinity of your bait. The pellet fish will think its feeding time and will start a frenzy.
-
Chumming is illegal.
Anyways back to thread.
I was out today hammered them like crazy on rice lake.Got about 10 in an hour.Got about 22 fish all day.

On the fly?
-
No i was using my UL spinning rod.It was so fun with the bigger fish fighting like a coho on a 7 weight.
-
I've never tried this fishery before, I have a 5"6' rod light action, line wt 4-18lb, would this rod work? With the reel spooled with 4lb?
-
Yes it could but i would go with a rod suited 2-6 lb line.I have one spool with 2 lb and one with 4lb.I usualy use the 4lb but in the summer i use the 2lb every once in a while.I recommend going to highwater in Lonsdale they have a couple UL rods for around 20-80 $.
-
Do you float fish? How big of a leader are you supposed to use for lakes?
-
Ok guys calm down ;D
Yes i was float fishing but i lost my only small trout float so i used a jighead with the magic bait.I was using about 8 inch leader. But the bait oh im not telling anyone that its my special it never fails me.But heres a hint go to you`re local tackle shop and look at the selection of powerbait.Look what looks best to you dont follow the others with power bait eggs there are better kinds. If you are talking about hook size i was using a size 8 Owner round hook that were barbless for a quick release.
-
When float fishing, what would be the total distance from float to hook?
-
Varies from 3feet to 8 feet depending on the situation.
Humpy you could pm me any questions you got on trout fishing with UL rods so feel free.
-
No need to cast more than 15 feet well where i was.You headed to rice lake?
-
Is it the one with the island up front?
-
Keep trying that spot. 8)
-
Thanks for the help MetalandFeathers, I tried my luck at Green Timbers but I didn't get anything. I think powerbait is the best bait because most people were getting multiple fish on it.
-
Your welcome Humpy.
Aaron if you went by the island spot did you find a small plastic box with weights floats hooks and spoons/spinners if so could you email me and i could recover it because i forgot it yesterday.
-

I passed by there this morning and didn't see anything. Some workers were chainsawing trees there today so may be a new fishing spot has been opened up by those guys. I think the loud noise of the chainsaw killed off the bite.
-
Ya thoses chainsaw guys made the bite turn off yesterday alobg with the eagles trying to get my fish.
-
Was at rice this morning for about 2.5 hrs and not a single bite. I did not see anyone around bring in a single fish.
I only brought my spoons & spinners so no bait fishing this time for me.
Will try again later in the week.
-
were you at the dock.
-
Five more lakes have been stocked this week.
http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html
-
Didnt see any tackle boxes around sorry. I had a good 2 hours fishing from bout 11:30am. Had 5 fish on only landed 4. :) died after 1 or 1:30pm ish.
Damn! I left about 1145 as I did not get a single hit.
Should have stuck it out for another hour.
-
were you at the dock.
Nope. I avoided the dock as there were multiple people fishing there already with at least 1/2 dozen young children. You could not have payed me enough to sit on that dock to fish with that many <8 yr old kids screaming and running around.
-
If you are at the lake early, you have a very good chance at getting into fish, especially after a recent stocking. People were getting them on lures this morning.
-
Damn! I left about 1145 as I did not get a single hit.

I think those Chainsaw guys spooked the fish and ruined your outing. I was getting into fish before they started, but none after. You might as well pack it up if they're going to make such loud noises for long periods of time.
-
You guys see any eagles swoop down for fish.Yesterday i saw multiple eagles swoop down for fish and one tryed to grab mine luckily i pulled it realy hard so the eagle missed. They seem so hungry and desperate for food.
-
Your welcome Humpy.
Aaron if you went by the island spot did you find a small plastic box with weights floats hooks and spoons/spinners if so could you email me and i could recover it because i forgot it yesterday.
Post it in the lost and found, I'll then put it up on our Facebook page for you to see if anyone has come across it.

Went to Rice yesterday, early, pouring rain, broke my rod tip in the parking lot, drove home, got my little telescopic spinning outfit and headed to Hastings. Not a single fish rising and even less bites. Nobody else there which was a blessing at least as it's such a small dock. That would be a nice little lake to fish if you could fish anywhere along the shore, but that dock is just tiny. My second and last time of fishing there.
-
i might go to rice lake on monday
-
2nd morning at mill and nothing no one was getting anything was ply fishing in the pontoon and no a single thing happening.
-
Seems like it isn't just me who isn't getting any fish from the urban lakes.
They're definitely much more elusive than previous stockings, even "matching the hatch" has been unproductive on the lakes with insect activity.
With buntzen getting 3000 though, luck should change. I've always found buntzen to be very productive after a stocking.
-
I might go monday too. Maybe even this weekend. Once you find where the fish are and what they like youre golden. I only wish there were bigger ones than these little 200g fish in rice lol.
You'll probably never see that happen with out fast people go and fish them out. The locals are barely stocked and I've seen well over 40 people in a afternoon fishing it, and most will won't even catch and release. That and the release programs drop at release size almost immediately. It gets expensive holding fishing for too long and gets too crowded.
-
Is this Twitter? 6 pages in a week of people talking about planning to go out or not catching anything? #comeon
-
Time to pull out the 8" silver rapalas for the Mill Lake Pike feast. It's going to be a gong show out there this weekend. Can't wait - well, might have to wait until Sunday. Saturday might be a wet Vedder day. I hear from a select few that the first week after a trout stocking, Mill Lake pike begin to gourge on the unsuspecting pellet trout.
I sure would like to hook into one of these fabled monsters of the swamp.
-
I was out today with the new puppy from spca, poor guy was "having kittens", when I was throwing my spey line around, only hooked into one in 4hrs but and returned, was mostly enjoyable to just have sun today...it felt great to be outside lol.
-
The Vedder really must be slow to see so much talk about urban lake fishing. :)
-
Aaron there must be something wrong there sir.I caught one 5 feet from shore and it wasnt from the dock. There actualy very close but it depends when you are fishing because there is a time where you can see 6+ fish jump at the same time 20 ft form shore.
Good luck Rieber ;D
-
This coming week, the hatchery will do the second stockings of the year for the five main Fishing in the City lakes (Lafarge, Como, Green Timbers, Rice and Hastings). Deer Lake will also have its first stocking.
-
Thanks for the update Rod.
-
Truck was out and about today, spotted at Lafarge and Hastings.
-
:) :)
-
Any idea when Deer will be stocked?
-
Is the gate open at Hicks yet, so a person can obtain access to the boat ramp? If so, when do they open the gate?
Thank You for any information.
-
guess they need to update their report as it shows last release 03-13-2014 for Coquitlam ???
Stocking reports are not updated immediately. Usually there is at least a 24 hours delay until the hatchery managers send the information in.
-
;) ;)
-
Yes but this is close to 11days :-\
That's exactly right. There have been no stockings at Lafarge or Como in Coquitlam since March 13th beside the ones yesterday. Anyway, they are up on GoFishBC's database now.
-
Is the gate open at Hicks yet, so a person can obtain access to the boat ramp? If so, when do they open the gate?
Thank You for any information.
It should be open as last year at this time I fished both deer and hicks lake. Also they are working on the new power line so just a heads up on the trucks hauling on that road.
-
sorry everyone i got the dates mixed up ::)
Those guys do such a great job and i don't want to knock them for not keeping things up to date,
my bad
-
The trout they recently stocked in rice lake seem a lot bigger than the last stocking
-
Went out to Rice on monday caught a bunch 10 minutes after they stocked it.It was cool to see all the fish swimming around like drunks.Today i got a couple aswell surprisingly by the dock. And these newer fish seem way larger than the old fish.
-
I thought the 210g was just an average size, for example if they stocked 100 fish 50 100g and 50 300g the average would still come out to be 200g. Not Sure but they really do seem bigger, not by much but, mabe an inch or two. And way fatter than what was in the lake before the stockings started lol
-
Four more lakes were stocked last week.
http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html
Seven more lakes will be stocked this week.
-
Lower Mainland catchable rainbow trout stockings will resume on October 2nd.
-
Lafarge, Como, Rice, Green Timbers and Mill Lakes were stocked yesterday. Numbers to come.
-
Was at Sasamat Lake last Wednesday and it had not been stocked since last year and caught 6 in about 2hrs. Decent size fish as well, all on a spoon.
Hoping to make it to Rice Lake later this week.
hey hoop, were you fishing off the floating dock or out on the water? And what size is decent size? Was thinking of taking my new fishcat up there this weekend.
-
Rods just trying to side track u all from staying away from his honey holes on the vedder ! :) ;)
-
The Vedder is empty this year, catchable rainbow trout at Mill Lake is where it's at! ;)
-

Actually I catch most from the shore around the lake. Have not had much luck from the dock.
-
Hey Rod, do you know if they will be stocking brood fish again? If they dont, why?
-
It was explained last year I think rod said the program got moved to the island
-
This week's stockings.
