I've been thinking of replacing the line on some of my reels for the soel reason that it's been there for a while, I can only find a few nicks and frays, and am replacing those anyway.
What the life of most of your line ?
Mono vs. Braid ?

I usually replace my line once a year, more often if there are nicks.

Baitcasting and center pin reels once a year.. As for my mooching reel, i respool it about 4 times in 5 months period.

If you think there's still a lot of line left why not turn it 'inside out'.
All you need is a quiet park/street and something to tie one end to-tree, post, car door handle.
Then walk the line completely out and then return to where you tied the end and retie that onto your reel, reel it all in.
Nothing simpler.
Better yet you might think of using Dacron backing first-100 yds of 20# Dacron then your mainline.
You'll rarely see the backing and it's be cheaper to fill your reel/replace line.
Some of the backing on my reels is over 10 years old-still good as new.

Yes, i have to agreed with Sam Salmon.. on all my reels, i put some backing on the spool to build it up.. so each time i change line for my baitcaster cost me about 120 yard and little more for my centerpins. But one thing to keep in mind is the backing must be tightly packed or else it will slip. Another way to cut the cost down is to buy line in bulk spool. Line will never go bad if you store them in a cool, dry area and stay away from the sun. I got 4 big 3lbs spool sitting in my draw for the last few years.
