I want to get an all around reel that I can use on the Fraser, Vedder,, ect.  One that I can get away with using heavy test if I choose.  Abu 7000 series any good?
Appreciate any suggestions.

Abu7000 would be ideal for Fraser River barfishing, but it is slightly too big and heavy for smaller tributaries like the Chilliwack/Vedder River. FA's suggestion of Calcutta 400 is a good reel for most systems. They retail around $260. Despite the higher cost, Calcutta is one of the top Shimano models and its performance is well worth it.

I personally feel the Calcutta 400 is still too big for the Vedder if you are targeting coho or pink salmon. For chinook salmon it is excellent. My Vedder setup for coho is a Shimano Curado, a smaller baitcasting reel that holds about 120 meters of 12lb test line.

It's very difficult to get one perfect setup for all salmon species, that is why we continue to be lured back into those tackle stores...

Thanks for the reply Rodney.   When you say that the Calcutta 400 is too big for ho's on the Vedder, what do you mean?  Is it too hard to cast small weight?

What's the advantage of a baitcasting reel over a spinning reel?

The Vedder is not a particularly big system. You do not need a large capacity reel. Having said that I use the Calcutta 400 for the springs, chums, steelheads in that and other systems.
