Title: What kind of Salmon is this?
Post by: badboi on August 15, 2011, 06:42:24 PM
Saw this bonked on the rocks in Squamish as I walked by but it was so chrome....so I snapped a pic.

Its a pink?

As the gap between tail fin and other fins is slender and faint trace of oval(?) dots visible in the tail fin, it is highly likely a fresh run pink salmon.
By looks of the tail area I think you could rule out coho, sockeye and spring.
Chums normally have dark edges on fins.
Definitely not a steelhead.

That looks to me like one nice pink salmon, about as fresh as they get.

While it is good that it is a pink, you may want to identify it before you kill it so you avoid a nasty fine.  When in doubt let it go. Just saying...

You have provided some excellent advice!

Re-read the opening post.....   Someone else bonked it, he took the picture.

Hate to tell you guys this, but even the freshest run of pinks will always have spots visible (even if they're faint) on the back and both lobes of the caudal fin.

Sockeye sometimes will have spot- like markings on the back and tail..usually sparsely dispersed and minimal. The best way to tell (when on hand) is to fan out the tail...sockeye tails will square off and start to lose the V shape.

i believe this fish is the latter, but it's hard to make distinction from one photo.

for the classification on pinks...it states they have no silver on the tail.
