Title: 2009 Fraser River barfishing video (both instructional and action footages)
Post by: Rodney on August 01, 2009, 03:03:16 PM
For awhile now some have been asking for information on barfishing. Nick, Chris and I have worked on this in the past week so that the information is readily available for anyone who wishes to learn. Total duration of this video series is 33 minutes and 17 seconds.

Part one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmfqiOQRkdQ

Part two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5lwZXyIepg

Part three: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVwQ-UZq-Tc

Part four: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJFXpNvHz4Y

Part five: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN8fkgoLJz8

Please watch the entire series before emailing me info@fishingwithrod.com if you have a question on barfishing. Most of the questions that I have received so far have been covered in these video clips. Nick Basok is a staff at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle (http://www.chwkdart.com/). He is usually at the store on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday so you are also welcome to drop by the store to ask him about barfishing or any other fisheries in the Fraser Valley.

Enjoy!

Great info Rod...I didn't realize the leader strength we should be using.
Makes a lot of sense.

How big is the bite when barfishing? Is it subtle? or very obvious?
I've never caught anything bar fishing, except a branch that was floating down stream so i'm wondering what to expect when/if it happens.

great video BTW. Keep 'em coming.

The bites are usually pretty obvious. The rod would be bouncing in the holder until you run over and grab it. The fish usually hook themselves.

Nice vids Rodney.  Can you please ask them to turn the volume down on the music next time as I felt it was far too loud and distracting.

You guys make it look easy :o. My two pals and I went ofer today at wellington which brings my 2009 stats 0 for 4 >:(. I think I might head out to that bar where the vid was shot ;D. I caught a beauty steelhead there last season fishing for springs. Don't worry I won't blab it around. Thanks for the vid guys. This might peak some interest among anglers who might give it a try and find it is a great way to fish!!

I hope you guys fired the net man. :o ;
Seen way too many fish lost because of inexperienced net handlers.
If you dont have a good net man, you are better off dragging it onto the beach.
I bet Nick was about fit to be tied after the second attempt. ;D

You were lucky enough to watch it live too. ;)

I couldn't figure out why my abdomen was hurting so much the next day until I saw on the video how deep I was planting that rod into it while fighting that fish. :o

Part four coming up in an hour from now.

The rod holders etc will be featured in part five of this video series.

For those who use YouTube regularly. Subscribe to this website's channel (http://www.youtube.com/fishingwithrod) as just about all the videos on this website are uploaded to that channel as well (except videos for FWR subscribers). I'm hoping to make more instructional video series such as this available.

Yet another informative segment. I had no idea what too look for when finding a bar to fish.

I'm heading out tomorrow afternoon for some bar fishing, just gotta locate a walk in bar (no boat).

Once again, thanks for the tips.

Very Educational - learned a lot from what I've watched so far.  :)

But two things... I agree with Terry - the background  ??? music is a little distracting...
And since I don't have a boat, nor do I know of anyone who has one worthy for the river, can you provide an instuctional video as to how to walk on water to get to some of these bars that are only accessible by water..  ;D

So what happens to all that weight after it breaks off into the river?

A lot are found during low water  flows in the Fall and Winter by chaps like leadbelly. ;D ;D It is a hobby by many as it is like treaurer hunting as you can find a lot of other goodies like rings, money, scissors, knives, bells and fishing rods, etc.
. ;D Some use metal detectors. I found a pair of sun glasses the other day as the water was receding on Maple Leaf Bar.

and some people find so many treasures that they can pretty much live off what they find...... ;) ;D

Excellent job on these videos!  There is so much talk on these forums about getting people to use selective and ethical fishing methods.  I think that these videos will convince a lot of people to give bar fishing a try.

I have often had the problem of having to use more weight than people fishing around me.  I guess that it is because I cast too far.  Is there an ideal distance from shore to cast (on the bar in the video, which I am familiar with, or all bars in general)?  Do the fish generally travel in the same lane a constant distance from the shore?  Is it better for everyone in a group to fish the same distance, or is it better to stagger them to cover more of the river's width?

Part four and five answer most of these questions actually, about how far to cast, what depth that you need to be fishing at, the amount of weight and how far apart people need to be.

Thanks.

I've been getting fair amount of emails from individuals who are expressing interests in barfishing. I'd like to answer all of them, but please be sure to go through all five parts of the video before emailing because most of the questions that I have received are already answered in the video.

In the future, expect to see more instructional series such as this as I develop new projects with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, local associations and stores. If there are specific fisheries that you'd like to see demonstrated, you're welcome to email me your ideas.

Just kidding of course!  Trying to introduce a little levity to a somewhat tense topic....

I'll let Chris take care of that. ;)

I'd say this thread is as relaxing as it could get. My firm belief is that educating (not to be confused with a different type of education that some like to use) and making the information transparent can only be beneficial to all.

Much of this credit has to be given to Nick Basok at Chilliwack Dart and Tackle. Not only the guy can catch fish like a drift net, he has the willingness to share his skills.

Would it be feasible to use this method of fishing on smaller systems such as the vedder/chilliwack or harrison as an alternative to float fishing for springs?

Great information as usual! Thanks Guys!

One question...    How do you rig up a second hook, as allowed for tidal Fraser?    Do you add another "steel wire", or do you rig a second hook to the terminal end?

Thanks.

This method is not as appropriate for smaller systems where you can cover the waters with either float fishing or spincasting. That being said, some anglers use it in the Vedder Canal from time to time. Perhaps it is also doable at the Lower stretch of the Harrison River where it is wider, but again it depends on what others are using around you so you do not disrupt their fishing.

One question...    How do you rig up a second hook, as allowed for tidal Fraser?    Do you add another "steel wire", or do you rig a second hook to the terminal end?

In the Tidal Fraser River, you use two steel wires to hook up the two hooks (basically duplicates). Also, the leader would be a lot shorter and a spin n glow is not used, you simply use bait on the hook in the Tidal Fraser River due to the lack of swift current.
