Tanker truck spill in Abbotsford
« on: September 28, 2005, 04:27:08 PM »

I just heard on CKNW that a gas tanker truck tipped over causing a 20 000 liter gas/diesel spill in Abbotsford near the 2500 block of Yale Court. Thousands of people have been evacuated. some has spilled into a "creek" and it is "unclear" yet whether it has got into the Vedder. Fisheries personnel are on the scene. I'm keepin my fingers crossed  :-\

Wow, thats way too close to home. I'll bet people I know maybe even my family were evacuated.  :o

As for the water ways, it would probably be the upper reaches of marshall creek, which in turn flows into the sumas and then later on into the vedder.  :-\

Quote
There were some tense moments today in Abbotsford as a fuel truck with a full load tipped over on its side.  The rig had dumped nearly all of its 23,000 litres of fuel onto an Abbotsford neighbourhood, causing a mass evacuation of hundreds of homes, three schools, and a community centre.  As the crews dealt with the highly volatile situation, power to a large portion of the town was also affected and fish in a nearby stream (marshall creek) were killed.  People living in the neighbourhood have been slowly phased back in but many are left asking how this could happen.  Police speculate the driver of the rig turned too hard and then tipped over, causing the spill that led to the evacuation.

Seems to me that fuel got into Marshall creek. Last time I checked it was a trib of the vedder.

Liar? Damn thats not a good thing to say. On the news they said it got into Marshall Creek which runs into the USA. Here is a quote from a report on the accident:

""We do have evidence now on hand of fish that have been killed as a result of the spill," said Sundquist, manager of conservation officer service with ministry,

The creek -- known in different parts of the city as the Marshall Creek and the Lonzo Creek -- has trout and salmon species in it, but Sundquist said officials don't know how many fish have been killed"

Happy now???

No mention of the Vedder........

Well perhaps our media has it wrong then:

Better yet, I used to do riparian zone repair on Marshall Creek so I have first hand knowledge on where exactly it goes.

biffchan, thanks for you info. I see on the link you provided it states Marshall Creek flows NE and E into the Sumas River. Some how I thought it may have drained both ways (to the USA and to the Sumas River) at some point on it gradient or am I out to lunch on that. :-[

Ever heard of the Fraser? Thats where the fish have to travel to get to the Vedder. Once the bait ban is lifted you can fish with roe barfishing, or float creek mouths, or fish tributaries ( which will remain nameless since last year someone mentioned a few and they got hammered ) Barfishing the Fraser in the fall months can be very productive and is underestimated. I will have my days on the Vedder but I will also be fishing many other areas as well. Tons of places to fish other than the Vedder.

In general when posting in a forum remember punctuation. It is a good idea to read what you’ve written before you post it. Your spelling and punctuation don’t have to be perfect, but it makes it a lot easier for the rest of us to read. Also, it makes you point get across much easier  :)
