Good question, especially when, "At current abundance levels, most of the sockeye are required for meeting spawning escapement goals, which are the highest priority management goal of the Fraser
River Panel".

The fish must be here, DFO decided to double the time of both set and drift net openings this weekend. ::)

There is currently (started 1800 Thursday) a set net opening for all bands until 1800 on Sunday.

All bands have a 24 hour drift net opening as well. Cheam First Nation is drift netting 0800 to 2000 today (Friday) and Saturday. Other bands are drift netting 0800 to 2000 on Saturday and Sunday.

Frank just fired over an email after being on an observing boat yesterday during the FN's drift net study. They witnessed most of the fish that were brought up, were being eaten by seals.

Take a look at the opening times by each band.

Have a good weekend.

FN plus assessment fisheries have taken nearly 400,000 sockeyes.  Sporties - zero, at least for law-abiding fishermen.  :(

And FN openings will continue this week with drift nets, plus illegal nets like it or not.  Tens of thousands of sockeyes will be gone from the spawning beds for these more FN openings. But stock is low and not enough fish are returning, DFO say.  What kind of logics?  If DFO is sincere about fish conservation, shut down FN, or the whole Fraser for that matter. If not, there are no credibility in its decrees, at least for me.  >:(

If DFO were a priviate institution, and we sporties are shareholders financing their operation, the head honchoes of DFO would be booted in a nano second.

As a general observation from behind the counter at Berry's, there is a rapidly diminishing respect for FOC/DFO and First Nations. Most folks don't make the seperation between bands and situations like what we have on the Fraser is nothing short of fuel, provided by the government, to further the ethnic and racial gaps we have in our society.... a true shame.

I would like to see the major decision makers from the federal fisheries minister right on down to the area managers, FIRED!!!! I vote for a motion of non confidence in those managing and making the decisions in the pacific region. If you folks at DFO/FOC are reading this.... give your goddamn heads a shake and end this madness. You are no better than poachers and are leading this country on a road to salmon extinction from the fraser to the brighton archeopolago, two places of many where your decisions and management ideas are so contrary to the facts of what is going on.
you will not be getting my liscence money next year that's for sure.

and to all the regular joes like me out there
don't ever vote Liberal again in your life if you value this countries resources and wilderness or if you think that special interest groups should not be looked after before the many.

I don't think the Conservatives or NDP will make one iota of difference.

no difference if conservative or ndp without a shift in policy

bill or mary gets a job directly after aquiring masters in political science
job working in Ottawant for minister or oppossition critic

after 5 years these people have a job with government of canada for life
many of these political animals reach the position of deaputy minister
with a salary of 150,000.00 plus

all our institutions in Ottawant are filled with these lifers and with the salaries they recieve they must be given a job to match
sadly that puts political people in charge of the hen house

how else could we get adscam the hrdc scandal gun registry and countless other wastfull and
unworkable policies from our betters

dfo is not the only non functional body in Ottawant

Bobby B, that is what FN gets for pepper-spraying DFO officers and ramming their boat.  Violence pays.  Unless our government has the gut to confront FN and face the consequence, this non-sense will go on.
