Snagged 2 pinks :-[ so went and collected tins, a few floats (1 Drennan ;D), cleaned up some garbage off a gravel bar, visited with The Roe Kid, took some pictures with Gwyn of where the river is under mining the Rotary Trail caused by too much gravel extraction I have been told and watched pink after being snagged and retained by many anglers. ??? ::)

I went out today for the first time this year. Got to a nice quiet upper river spot at first light - only one other guy in sight. Coho on, is it a hatchery? - coho off! ??? Then another fish, but a big one, the headshakes say spring and it breaks the leader. As it gets lighter I see that the area I am fishing is loaded with pinks. They are totally ignoring the roe I am using. I switch to a blade, but they ignore that too. I even try the pink spoons that were so deadly on the lower Fraser, but they are just not interested. Time to move on. One other upper river spot yields a couple of bites and I land a 10 pound hatchery coho. ;D I was fishing mostly roe, and it was intersting that the few bites I got all seemed to be coho and springs - the pinks were way more plentiful bu they ignored it.
I headed to the lower to check out some spots. A lot more people, a lot more pinks, and lots of pinks being snagged. I did see a couple of coho landed by others, but noen for me. I did land some pinks - some snagged, and some that actually bit (or flossed?). ::)
The amount of pinks around is impressive and great, but it will be a lot nicer fishing when they thin out a bit.

PS this was today not yesterday.
chris was it a 20g piker? First one I've lost this year >:(

A lot more people, a lot more pinks, and lots of pinks being snagged.
I saw some pinks taken home that would turn your stomach.

No a 24 zeppler. People need to write their name and phone number on them so I can return them which I was able to do a couple of years ago to Joey. ;D ;D

I saw 2 chaps fly fishing while I was picking up garbage. One fellow hooked a pink and I could see it was snagged. I drifted by and saw it was hooked on the pectoral fin. I keep walking and up the beach it went. The fellow let it die in the sand and then took it to the water to clean off the sand and added it to others in a garbage bag. One would say I should say something but one would spend all day doing so. Enforcement needs more people but government cutbacks hamper proper patrols but they are out there as much as they can. I think they could write enough tickets to pay a few officers salaries.

Great day on the water today.
4 very nice sockeye landed today by misc people in just over 2 hours. Miles above the Vedder Bridge so they probably weren't Cultus Lake fish. All fish were handled carefully and released. Fishing was decent overall as I managed a 30lb Red Spring...very nice condition still. Meat was firm. Fish was silver with a hint of colour on him. As I brought him to shore, I couldn't help but notice a very faint red tinge to his chrome body. I don't bonk Fall springs in the Vedder too often, but something told me to bonk this guy. Glad I did. He was a pure Red Spring. Had a piece for dinner; it was as nice as any Red Spring I've caught mid summer on the Fraser. Coho are there too, but kind of spooked. I did manage a 9lb hatchery fish yesterday at first light on roe.

Nice, a red spring, I should start checking it before assuming it as whites on my springs. More fall reds caught in the last couple of years is a positive sign. Any pictures?

I saw three co's escorting a guy over KWB today on the drive back from the river so it seems that they have been listening to all the calls.

Got my knuckles busted up pretty good tonight on the Silex from a couple of brute springs :o also lost a nice coho

Landed 3 springs, 2 cohos and a few pinks. Kept the 2 hatch coho and rest released. Once sun came over the tree top all action just stopped.

More than likely they were indeed Cultus Lake Sockeye. From A small radiotracking study which was done on Cultus Lake sockeye (we knew they were Cultus Lake Sockeye because we caught them at the fence then transported them back down to the Vedder and from their DNA) in 1996 (I think that was the year) did bypass Sweltzer Creek and head upstream and hold for a week or so then head back down to figure out where they went wrong. Sometimes they found Sweltzer sometimes they didn't. The study started the first week in October (it was the last year they behaved normally, ie returning) and went I think into Dec. I remember being snowed in for a few days....
With the antics occurring on the River one wonders how many (sox) have been taken home?
Anyways, glad to hear that the fish were all carefully handled and released.

Big Coho - how did you bust your knuckles with a Silex ??? I fish one also and have never had my knuckles wrapped :-\ I was also out today and hooked into lots of brutes, landed one and lost 2 coho >:( got most my fish on roe until i ran out and switched to a colour wool noone else was using ;D
anyone else notice the average size of the springs is alot bigger then last year ?? smallest i saw today was like 25lbs :o I hooked into one that i could even handle with the 3113M, had to be about 50lbs. and yes it was fair hooked cause i got it close twice until it freaked and i lost LOL

Was on the river in the mornig ...lost 1 coho , landed multiple pinks , released a 7-8 pound spring and bonked a 22-23 pounder that turned out to be a marble. Not sure what all the fuss is about with springs smelling out of the Vedder but this one had no strong scent at all and the flesh was nice. Maybe its only the pure whites?

yes the pure whites are the stinky ones however the marbles will also have a bit of scent. I have found that springs only start to get stinky when they start to grey up. all the ones i got last year were super chrome and pure whites and had no smell at all. The one i kept yesterday didnt really stink and it was chrome when hooked but turned a little grey once it sat for a bit ::)

killed a chrome white jack last weekend, bbq'd up well. like hook said, when they go green is when they stank!!!!
