Hello, just wondering if any of you go smelt fishing and if so have you caught any yet this year.... I used to do it all the time but havent done it in ages... not sure if i want to get a salt water license if it aint that good this year...

I think FA meant go down to Spanish Bank as it maybe good this time of the year. I recall last year the area was littered with smelt for about a week or so, in early June.
Get a saltwater licence anyways, plenty of other types of good local saltwater fishing coming up this year.

If thats what you meant FA i give you my sincere apologies... it seemed like you were being smart and short with me but thats one thing about the net... you never know what context to take it...
I might just do that Rod... I probably will be out in the ocean going for the pinkys...

You brought up a very good point as this is a common mistake among users. Far too often people misunderstand and hell breaks loose. :)
FA is short, but smart? ;)
The pink fishing should be good in August and September, plus tidal Fraser can be excellent for coho salmon in October, so a saltwater licence is definitely worth it.

I was on a bike ride down Spanish Banks tonight-a few guys were fishing.
High fast tide + heavy winds=lots of crap in the water but one guy had few real fat Smelts in one set so there are fish around.
What I saw from last year is that the fish really move around-one night Kitsilano area beaches are producing heavy a few nights later it's Spanish Banks-you never know.

I thought the smelt fishing was closed down because of low returns...is that the commercial side of things and not the sport side???

I was down at Third Beach last Saturday with the kids. hile I was there I was watching the Smelt fishing. It was kind of wierd. Two guys with nets about forty feet apart. The guy to the North was ONLY cathing perch and the guy to the South was only catching smelts. It was pretty bizarre.

Plenty of good places to fish for pinks in the tidal Fraser from shore. There isn't a single best place, as the fish maybe going through south arm during one tide, then north arm during another. Hard to say until the season arrives. :)

were they tossing the nets from the seawall and getting the seaweed and slime on the bike and walking path?

Anyone know if from Parksville to Qualicum Beach area is any good for smelt fishing (gillneting)?
