cultus lake pikeminnow cull to continue
« on: May 22, 2007, 01:54:31 PM »

this mornings front page of the chilliwack progress is about the dfo's plan to cull more pikeminnow. 3 years ago they took 4500 from the lake, did it help? no. last year they killed an astonishing 16000, again its not working, they have already killed 8000 this year and plan on reaching 18000 by the end of the year. they HOPE this will help but they really dont know, infact after studying the contents of their stomachs they found in the majority of them crawfish, not salmon fry. they have not been finding fish fry in their stomach, so why continue? are they looking for a scapegoat? certainly, the big reason the cultus lake sockeye are not coming back is due to pollution and over harvesting. take last year for example, the cultus lake fish had a better year than previous because there was little netting going on by commercial and natives at the time. so now they will they eradicate a species that is not at fault and has coexisted with the sockeye for a long time. pikeminnows do feed on salmon fry but in this case its not a factor, why not kill the dollies, rainbows and cutties, dont they feed on salmon fry and eggs?
