There is ball bearing on the side of screw ,for the lack of better term, where pawl is running.

If you're talking about the worm gear shaft/screw, then yes, the C4 has a BB there.  The C3 does not - it's a bushing.  So that doesn't account for the "extra" bearing in each reel.

I understand that the number following the "C" is the total number of bearings. (C3=2BB+1RB, etc...)
I agree that  ABU's current statement is confusing. There is no third BB in the C3, or fourth BB in the C4.

Thanks Milo.  That makes sense to me.  But that's not what not what it says on Abu Garcia's website for the C3 or C4!  For example, Abu Garcia advertises that the C3 has 3 stainless steel BB + 1 roller bearing:

Just took apart a new black bent handle c3, and yes it's now a 3+1 bearing reel. There is now a bearing on the worm shaft. All the older ones are a 2+1
