Were you waiting to catch a prestigious Steelhead before starting an official 2015 fish porn thread Rodney? ;D
All kidding aside, nice fish and that second pic is stellar. Crazy timing!
-
What a brute!! Well done Rod.
Any chance you measured it?

Of course! The year does not start until I catch a real fish. Kind of like Chinese New Year, always starts a bit after the real New Year. ;)

Thanks. I actually let it go right afterward so didn't measure it.
-
This fish is a tank! Nice one Rod!

Thanks Brandon.

Havent had the chance to get out in a while, but got out to a local lake this weekend. Here's one of the fish I managed to pull up through the ice.

Its actually not too bad up here. Only dropped to minus 10 over night. Nice brookies.

Only -10…. Cold enough for me. I already had enough after one day of fishing on the ice at -1C. ;D

Hey Everyday, i noticed you run your worm with the head of the worm closest to the hook. Is there an advantage to that or is that just the way you like to rock it?
-

Hatchery?
-
Hey Everyday, i noticed you run your worm with the head of the worm closest to the hook. Is there an advantage to that or is that just the way you like to rock it?
Both.
I use Holey worms exclusively now, due to how quickly you can change from a regular bait set up, etc to the worm. Great for changing it up on the fly. These worms have the hole down the middle that comes out half way up the worm.
I noticed when running the worms tail down, I was getting a lot of short strikes and losing a lot of fish. When the head is down, I seem to get way better hook sets and rarely lose fish. I also do seem to hook more with the head down, and it looks better in the water (the tail bounces and flutters around more).
Hatchery?
Yep, all the cutties we hit today were hatchery.
-
When your float goes down don't strike right away. Tighten line till you feel the fish then strike. They usually don't spit the worm right away but hang on to it. If the fish lets go most likely it will take it again. You get a way higher percent of hook ups with out losing them this way. I have been fishing worms for 40 yrs.
-
Cool, thanks for the insight! ;D

Tis' the season for metal. Everyone should hope on bored ;D
Right now with the low water, you can't go wrong with a 2/5 R&B. Copper/orange and silver/gold, and solid silver have been spectacular in the low water. Have also got the odd one on chartreuse/brass and silver/orange! I won't say how many we've hit (tend to get flamed for that), but lets just say it's been A LOT, all on metal!

Any time the rivers come up a bit after rains, the pink worms have also been getting them all riled up. We will generally run something small through first, and then do a quick change to the holey worm to fish em through "last and fast".

That's a brute! Lower Mainland?
-
That's right, one of my favourite Lower Mainland river systems. Estimated weight was around 15 lbs.

Hi
Some friends and I drove ten hours from Mackenzie to camp and fish the Kitimat over the weekend. We fished hard for four days straight with not a single tap. My switch rod snapped on day two. That combined with the lack of action had me feeling pretty rotten. I didn't drive all that way to throw spoons so I hurried up to Terrace and got myself a new spey rod (woo!). On the final run of the trip, this guy hit like a brick wall. Safely caught and released. Made it all worth it.

Caught this 21lb Chinook out by Gabriola Island/Nanaimo. Went with Bon Chovy for 2 days for a friend's bachelor party. 15 of us, everyone caught a fish. On the second day our boat (out of 4) reached our limits. This was the biggest fish of the trip!

One thing to remember about these transplanted Chilliwack summer reds is they are genetically adapted to travel hundreds of kilometers up the Fraser River, burning fat along the way. This fish and those filmed by Chris are dark, but don’t have the travel so little energy (fat) is used. With this stock it’s only the skin … inside these are prime eating fish.
Years ago I sampled 20 spawned summer reds for a parasite at the Chilliwack River hatchery... the flesh of these spawned fish, in late August, was still pink so I canned up a bunch of fillets; they were excellent, with lots of oil. It’s a real shame this stock will never naturally colonize the C-V but they may be finest eating fish this hatchery produces.
-
Agreed. The Vedder/Chilliwack red springs are prime table fish for sure! Not to take anything away from Rod's chromers! :D

Landed my first red spring this week. Finally landed all pacific salmon!

These fish are from up north the run is much larger than we get in the lower mainland, but the risk of a grizzly fishing companion is high too lol.

Ya that was us !!
I didn't get to land a single fish myself because my kids wanted to reel them all in. They quickly gave up on the jigs and just played and waited for my dad and I to "hook up" then run over and reel them in and yes they fought almost every fish from right after the hook set (how else will they learn to bring in fish properly) My oldest even tailed one of his brothers fish like a pro which amazed us all ! :o
that kid was tossing some great looking loops with that spey :D

Rock...that isn't even where adipose is...back little further...oh wait...zoomed in looked closer over 2 right...that is a wild...snap!
-
It's a wild ho, not sure if you're going for it or not but if you're thinking about persecuting him for a killing a wild ho find out the location first. There are stream where it's legal to retain wild Coho... If you were we're going in that direction haha
-

Not all streams in BC have the same regulations as the lower mainland. Some Norther rivers are open year round for coho and do not require the fish to be clipped. Yes that is an adipose fin.

The question was posed if you can prove it was dead.

Its not dead its sleeping in my freezer now lets get back to the "fish porn" the reason this thread exists.

Floater maybe from now on you can just show us sheltered lowered mainlanders pics of clipped fish so we all sleep better. I'm surprised nobody tried burning you on a stake for fishing on a river either. Oh wait the Wack is still open.

Burnaby Lake Carp in the Fly :D :D :D :D

Went to the Mamquam/Squamish Rivers the last two weekends to catch some pinks! Looks like the pinks were turning into zombies, looking ugly and haggard.

Lots of color on that fish. Probably a life-time dweller of that particular pool. They live up to 10 years according to some papers and grow up to 7+ kg. That fish is probably 5 kg.

Lots of color on that fish. Probably a life-time dweller of that particular pool. They live up to 10 years according to some papers and grow up to 7+ kg. That fish is probably 5 kg.
Read up ... I believe Dan is 23, perhaps 24, and I think that fish is larger than 5 kg ;)

Hey Dave!
It's actually a lake char, not a bully! I got some decent bullies too though, pics of those are yet to come! ;) I might also have a pic of one or two that are bigger than this one (Lakers that is).
-
Cool! You certainly fooled me but I should have known ::) ... Love char, whatever species; apex predators for sure.

Should not you and Buck be holding hands and singing Kumbya while out counting fish in the upper river while under a distainful glare from Peters? This is of course after you have all had your senior discounted coffee at Mcdonalds. The life of retired guys. Try fishing some time and get off of the 'puter! :o :o

I think my fishing days are behind me Brian, been there, done that for over 50 years. I now prefer to advocate for wild fish and do what I can to improve habitat conditions for them. I’m on the river every day so I still get my fix ;) And yeah, Buck and I will be counting steelhead again this spring. Don't know about Kenny though ::)

Coho are showing up late, so it's not too late to get your TT spinners to hammer on them! The black blade and copper body have been working well on the Vedder lately ;)
-
Pretty epic he says ::) hey what kinda knot do you use for tying hooks to the spoons?
-
The know I use for the spoons has been well discussed on the "trailing hook spoon rigging method" thread on this site (there have been lots of questions added and lots of discussion on how well it has worked, changes, etc).
It can also be found here:

nice pics E.D......ive had no luck with the TT spinners here on the local flows. Crocs seem to work better no matter how much i use the TT spinners or spoons. Very fustrating because they are just awesome looking product.

Really?
I'd say out of the 30 or so coho I've hit in a dozen after work trips on the Vedder this season, all but maybe 5 have been on the Trophy Tackle spinners. Most have fallen victim to a silver blade/blue body combo and a black blade/copper body (especially deadly in low clear water like we had before the rain).
The rest of the fish I've hit have been on spoons. Mostly copper/orange 2/5. Only one to the beach on roe, but missed and lost quite a few (I'm rusty and slow this season apparently).
Your experience on the Vedder though, however is what I had found years past. I always found spoons worked better than spinners there, but this year it's been the opposite for me.
The rest of the flows that I've gone to, the chartreuse/gold spinners have been working well. You really need to change things up though. The other day I fished spinners/bait for 2 hours with only 2 coho to the beach, before switching up to the fly and hitting 10. Different things work on different rivers. Helps to change it up.
-
i'll pick up a couple of those this week....give err a try. Had more luck lately with twitching jigs as well. Its been an alright season anyway so no complaints about the fishing on vedder. All springs have been on roe and all pinks chum and coho on metal.

I cant see the pics you uploaded on the other post you have about your steelhead season. read through it all through your blog, great read. fix the pics, unless its my computer but all i see is broken links.
would love to see some pics tho
Thanks for the heads up!
I can't for the life of me figure out why that happened. I had them directly embedded in the post. I checked the trailer hook method ones (and also got my brother to check on a different computer) and those ones are still fine. I'll try to remember what pics went with the steelhead recap and fix them.
Cheers!

Its ok if we upload a lot of photos right? ;) ::)
all these photos are in order of when they were taken. Only got a miniscule amount of photos compared to the amount of fish caught :-[
ok lets start off this season in july -
-
I admire your skill TLS. Very well done! I came up on you fishing one time by the side of Chris G. and was very impressed with your hook-ins rate. Wow!
-
I think it safe to say we now know why there are no salmon left in local rivers. :o
-
Sweet pics sockeye. I like your fish... and your Islander collection
-
nice work.

Thanks so much guys! Yeah i caught 90% of these fish on roe. The other 10% is on jigs (all pinks / some chums, Even got a few Chinook on jigs) The steelhead was caught on September 3rd on a jig.
-
Did you kill enough fish? LOL... after about 5 (10lbers) in the freezer my family is good for the year!

Some families are bigger than others ::)

Well at least the "where did the coho go this year" issue has been solved...... into that young guys freezer!
-
nice pics. those are impressive catches for any young fisherman. Hope to meet you on the flow someday. I guess the case of the "Vedder Missing Coho" is now closed. ;D

Started out early on the fly this year...

Looks like a winter run - epic fish on the fly. LM or Island?
-
Good ole Van Island!
-
I found a large happy wild couple in the LM. The buck measured 33" x 18.5".
Sorry for the terrible quality. I was fishing alone and these are captures from my video camera set up on shore.

Jeez that's a pig! Biggest coho we hit this year was only 32 inches, but a 20.5 girth! After that one huge one, most were fairly small with the exceptions of a couple in the 12-14 range.
The only 33+ inch fish I've been able to hit this past week before the rains were these guys...

...and I thought my fish was fat... Your big 'ho would have been at least 2 lbs heavier.
This year before these two my Coho averaged about 3.5lbs (including Jacks) with the biggest being 5lbs.
That trip really made my season.
Nice steelies.

It was definitely a very small fish year! Some river systems did much better than others in fish size, but I found when that was the case there were fewer fish around.
I also found most of the later fish (November fish) were the big ones. The later push definitely came much later this year, and we were still hitting chrome ones last week still out here which is crazy.
I love the various colours these late coho go...
