Jed Davis book
« on: November 04, 2014, 11:03:52 PM »

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can purchase Spinner Fishing For Steelhead, Salmon And Trout by Jed Davis for a non-ridiculous price?
Preferably somewhere local. Thanks.

Last time I was in Berry's they had a copy.  Have you read Bill Herzog's Spoon Fishing for Steelhead?

Thanks for the information, I'll check out Berry's this week. I haven't read the Herzog book yet, though I plan to purchase it as well. The Herzog book, the Davis book, and the Kageyama book were suggested to me in a previous thread on spoon/spinner fishing.

I initially checked out Amazon, but didn't find their prices reasonable.

Just did a quick search.  Prices are around 20-30 on amazon.

Is that not reasonable or is the shipping where your balking?

I would sell you mine but I cross reference the temperature information regularly. both herzogs and davis... though the davis book has 'better' information.

that being said, I picked up my two books at a steelhead society of bc fund raiser.... its actually the same one coming up at a pub in coquitlam.
for $90 I got the two books listed and a dozen r&b spoons and a dozen spinners from trophy tackle.  that was the deal of the year for me.
even with a $20 cover charge... which paid for a brew and burger anyways.  ;D

not sure if the fund raiser is listed on this site, but it is on flybc as well as bcfishing reports.

I got mine used through either Chapters or Amazon. It was cheap and in decent shape.

@clarkii: Minimum price including shipping is ~$27 U.S. if I have it shipped to the U.S. --- for a used book.
If shipped to Canada it would be $40 U.S. and 30 business days for shipping.
(That's ignoring some of the truly ridiculous prices in excess of $100)

Considering that Herzog's book is $13 new and Kageyama's book is $15 new, and given that the book is from the same publisher, I'd think that a fair price for a new book would be ~$14. Paying ~2x the price of a new book, for a used book, is in my opinion price gouging and therefore unreasonable.

(some may consider it reasonable under the laws of supply and demand due to the book being out of print (from what I can tell). I don't share that view.)

@banx: No worries, I realize that a good book deserves to be kept in one's personal library as reference material. That's a great deal you got! Thanks for the tip, will have to look into the fundraiser.

My Herzog book arrived yesterday from Amazon.

Book (New): $15.95
Shipping and Handling: $4.68
GST: $1.03

Total: $21.66 CDN

Within 30 seconds I knew it was well worth it.

publishers are not good indicators of the price range for books.  There could be more pages, more photos, more work in the writing and therefore higher production costs between two books by the same publisher.   The job of he publisher is to get the book to print and sold.
