Coquitlum River
« on: October 24, 2004, 10:21:22 PM »

I was driving by riverview hospital and saw a stretch of river; part of the coquitlum river. Just wanted to know what i can catch there, salmon, trout, etc., anyone fish it before?

Salmon, trout, steelhead.  Very precious river.  Currently one of the provinces most environmentally pressured.  I don't fish there any more.  The fish need every chance they can get to survive.

Go ahead and fish it.  It's only my choice.  It won't bother me to see people fishing it.  Lots of people fish the mouth below the Maryhill by-pass (tidal).  Chum do use it as a route to the smaller rivers and creeks.   Hyde Creek salmon Festival is Nov. 14th 11-3.  Check with the guy's at Jamers on Shaugnessy Street.  They should have lots of info about the Coquitlam River.

It's open for Coho this year. I would rather see ethical anglers on the river to kill a few and report infractions, than leave the poachers to their free for all!

I understand some parts of the river are native and private property, where is the reserve?

Try the flood tide just above the Maryhill bridge non-tidal (check regs.) for new salmon.  The first stealhead I ever caught was way up past the mines 20 some years ago.  I haven't touched it for about 15 years, but I have small kids and may get back at it as it's very close to home.  Glad you had some fun.  There is often lots of salmon in Hoy creek soon (chum).  I haven't checked it out lately, but there is good access through the townhouse complex on the North West corner of Dewdney & Lougheed.  It's great for kids because they can get close to the salmon.

I had tons of fun, hooked a few chum, lost all but one on colorodo blades.  All fish were very dirty and colored, boots. :P
