Title: Chilliwack River, October 25th 2011
Post by: Big Steel on October 25, 2011, 01:30:51 PM
Hit the lower river a bit late this morning, only a couple guys up from me... bait up with some roe from yesterdays fish, plant a cast out and Coho on....after a spirited battle get the silver coho to hand.  Nice medium sized hatchery.  Looked to be a good day, but only a couple more pretty fresh chum and that was it... still a nice day and got some more fresh roe for the weekend.  Nothing on blades today, unlike yesterday when both Coho were on blades. Here's a couple pics from the last 2 days.

I swear chedder fish take the weekend off. This Sunday i got totally skunked, fished upper to lower on blades , roe even jigs. All i got was one strike that i slept on because i was already on Tilt. Everyone i talked to had same thing to say. The weekday reports seem to be a lot better.

Less pressure = less spooked = better fishing???

Only two rods in the first run i fished mine and my buddies, one that has produced Ho`s earlier this month. So yes i agree with you but that was not the case this weekend.

Nice car..nice fish..when you use roe from the day before do you pro cure it?

It usually takes me 3 days from start to finish for curing and preparing roe before I use it....not an issue usually because I don't think I've fished 2 days in row for years.

I just dried it out for about 10 hrs, threw it in some borax and grabbed it out of the fridge on my way out of the garage in the morning....

And thanks, that's my baby!!   ;D

I cure pautzkes fire cure as per their directions, which is 2-3 days in the fridge. Pro cure is 10 hours max. I would fish pautzkes after 10 hours aswell if I had to. I just happen to have a well stocked bait freezer.

I've used paitzkes after 2 hours, as long as its dried for a bit after its workable

Nice Dave, at least you got one. :P

We had the worst trip, ever.

Not because we were being crowded out. In fact, we saw six other people all afternoon - Three at the beginning of our trip, three at the end of our trip on the way back to the car.

We didn't land anything. Nina lost a fish and I missed a bite at last light when we found some active coho, but that's not the worst thing.

it's the worst trip because my DSLR and wireless microphone receiver went for a cold bath this afternoon. The mobile tripod made a $2,000 flip right after I finished a shot, while I looked away literally for one second. Cameras go for a swim from time to time, but this one is a little different since our business depends on the setup.

Good excuse to upgrade I guess. ::)

sorry to hear that Rodney

as for upgrade, mind asking what dslr you recommend? lol since I was wondering to buy one long time ago, but always have no clue what's good to buy

That depends on what your budget is. If you're just starting out, then any one that you are willing to spend money on is good enough. I'd get a cheap one to practice and decide whether if it is something you want to use more before making an upgrade. If you don't want to use it for videos, then Canon 450D and below are worth considering.

If I bring my Canon (which is the one that drowned today) to them, will they smash it into pieces? ;D

It's sitting in a bucket of rice now so maybe Christmas will arrive earlier this year...

I have heard putting wet cellphones in rice. Does the rice dry out the camera/cell ?

Yes it acts as a desiccant, ie absorbs the moisture.

Hi Rodney, have you heard of the new single lens reflex system called 4/3 or fourth third? It is claimed to be better than the DSLR. Takes videos and excellent pictures.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear that Rod.  At least you can claim it as a business expense!  As for the coho, I imagine the bright sunshine didn't help entice the fish to bite.  Look out for a fairly heavy rainfall this Friday...

Beside photographs, our DSLR is mainly used as a filming rig with a few other devices attached to it, so other cameras don't really offer the features that we need. The DSLR body is mostly dead after yesterday, but that's not really my concern. Other devices on it worth a lot more money than the body so hopefully they can be restored.

Sorry to hear about your Canon T3 rodney i saw your tripod is good and heavy one. I usually rap my DSLR and lens with plastic rap 3x with just the front lens expose the only hassle is the focusing but if you know your depth and range no problem.. maybe Christmas will be knocking early on your doorstep ..Ding!!..Ding!! ;D

BTW..Roeslinger...I use the JAR method where I leave it in the fridge turning it every several hours, once all the juice that first come off gets reabsorbed I take it out and dry it slightly then sprinkle borax over it and pack it...usually takes a couple days start to finish. Maybe I'm doing more than whats required but it seems to work fine so I stick with the method.

I'll do a search on the forum to see how other do it, next time I get roe I'll try a different method.

I just got my wife one of these for  her Nikon D80:

Cheap as borscht, works like a charm.

There are more expensive and sturdier variations:
