There is always discussion on how many sockeye are harvested by all sectors each season. I am wondering if those that harvested sockeye this year on the Fraser have any idea (or a guess) on how many they figure have been retained this year by the recreational sector.

I don't know about the rec, but the commies and FN have 3M so far.

Chris I don't know how they would even begin to accurately count the total rec catch but it would  be very  low compared to the numbers retained by other user groups,my guess would be somewhere in the area of 150,000 fish.

The returns are still coming in from the big blue into the straight.
There will be more openings to come.

that is the million sockeye question...i think sea run is right in the fact that there you no way they could possibly accurately estimate how many fish have been taken...i would personally like to know the dfo's educated guess...

Area 12 (Johnstone Straits)
Gill Nets extended 24 hrs to 18:00 hrs Mon Aug 28 in the same Subareas as
defined in fishery notice FN-0785. Minimum mesh 100 mm. maximum depth 90
meshes.  Maximum hang ratio 3:1. Corkline to web distance minimum 0 cm, maximum
1.5 m.

Gill Nets extended 24 hrs to 18:00 hrs Mon Aug 28 in the same Subareas as
defined in fishery notice FN-0785. Minimum mesh 100 mm. maximum depth 90
meshes.  Maximum hang ratio 3:1. Corkline to web distance minimum 0 cm, maximum
1.5 m. 

NOTE:
1. In the Roller Bay area (portion of Subareas 11-1, 11-2, 12-12, 12-11) gill
net set times are 45 minutes. In the Johnstone Straits area (Subareas 12-1,
12-3 and 12-4, portion of 12-6, 12-8, portion of 13-7, 13-8, 13-9 and 13-27 to
13-32), gill net set times are 60 minutes. All vessels must have operating
revival tanks that meet the specifications as outlined in the Area D conditions
of licence.

2. Gill net vessel masters must report their catch information to the service
provider for the previous days fishing through to midnight by 08:00 hours the
following morning. Gill net vessel masters must also record their catch
information in their log books for the previous days fishing through to
midnight by 08:00 hours the following morning.

3. Gill net vessel masters are reminded of the mandatory non-retention and non-
possession of coho, chinook and steelhead. Gill net vessel masters are asked to
release chinook to the water unharmed whenever possible.

4. Gill net vessel masters are reminded that logbooks, operating revival tanks
and one hour set times (except the Roller bay area) are mandatory as condition
of their licence and are legal requirements.

Hey Chris,i think in years past the number was 50,000 then the past couple years ( not including last year) went to 100,00. My guess for this year is 300,000 or more.

Personally, I am tired of watching what is going on each and every day. Too much greed on the river these days. Would be nice to get things back to normal, hopefully after the long weekend it's over.

We will look after cleaning the bars we fish once everyone is gone and I can get the bar rods back out.

Yes with the amount of activity out there you could be close with your estimate Vic.

Good job on planning to cleanup some of the bars, well done. I hope some other guide companies will follow your lead. I will try to get some help on Peg for starters from this forum to deal with the line etc.. I will post a time a few days in advance and see if a few others are able to help out. Will go for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If we see a closure on the 5th which we should hear about tonight we will try for the following weekend.

Grassy of course will need attention so maybe some that have been working that area will look after that and will post their intentions. Then there is all the upriver locations, quite a task to get things back to where they should be.
