Title: Nicomekl River, November 11th 2008
Post by: joska on November 11, 2008, 03:54:34 PM
well good news and bad news...  i hit the nick today and fishing was slow.. still managed to land five  cutties... all were the regular 10-12 inches... <<and the bigg ones are in there>>  must be  llots of food in the system cause they all were real fat... was a good day none the less... and the bad news... was reeling in my rig and i felt something.... soon felt like a snag but it kept coming as i brought my line in...  i snaged a small spin caster... some kid had his hook across the stream  in the trees across...  i see there's a vedder  river clean up would it be even worth trying to do one for the nick...

Organizing a river cleanup is quite easy. Start small and let it grow. The first few Vedder River cleanups were attended by dozens of people. Today they are attended by over 200 people each time.

My recommendation would be to contact the Nicomekl Enhancement Society (http://www.nicomeklhatchery.com/) first. Although their primary project is operating the hatchery, they occasionally do other stream-related projects such as tree planting (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=16133.0). The hatchery can be used as a meeting place for cleanup volunteers.

Stream cleanups are best done in September. It's a good idea to be part of the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (http://www.vanaqua.org/cleanup/home.php).

Good to hear some cutties were caught. ;)

Believe it or not, bread works great in that river for Rainbows and the loads of carp..

There are also some sturgeon in there too. Most are under 3 feet.

The sunfish are not all that big but they seem to inhale my worm everytime! thisyear i've cought more than years past! I know they do not belong in this system but what do ya do? I'm not the kind of fisherman to just throw them into the bushes thats just crule! But there must be something! Now where are these carp hiding again? I fish around 184 st and over the past 10 plus years never hooked one!

Can you catch now or are they mainly a summer fish ? Is the Nicomekl clean , what I mean is would you eat the sunfish from that river  ?

to be honest i myself have only caught the sunfish in the nic in the summer and the begnning of thefall then there just gone! once the coho are in you just don't see them no more! maybe down lower you might find them but not in the upper! If you wassn catch and release some fish try picking up some of rodneys spinners that he has for sale they work great for most of the fish in there!

Tight-lines,

Probably not a good idea to post pictures of illegally harvested fish on the web...

Region 2 freshwater regulations:

CATCH QUOTAS
(See tables for exceptions)
Trout/char: 4, but not more than
• 1 over 50 cm
(2 hatchery steelhead allowed)
• 2 from streams or sloughs
And you must release:
Wild trout/char from streams or sloughs
(EXCEPT streams that flow into tidal
waters north of and including
Jervis Inlet)

I don't believe the Nic is North of Jervis Inlet... Stop killing wild cutties  >:( >:(, there are other fish to eat, like the bass in your avatar.

Post by: Sterling C on December 02, 2008, 11:35:35 PM
Tight-Lines, you may want to get into the habit of checking the regulations before you head out. There is no retention of wild trout and char from streams in most of region 2. The Nicomekl is no exception.  :-[

Obviously, this is a case of being unaware of the regs rather than blatantly disregarding them as you have posted this fish on the web for the whole world to see.

Let this be a lesson to you and all others reading this, that it is your responsibility to know and follow the regulations on whatever water body you are fishing. Ignorance is no excuse.

It's not a new regulation it's been there for years! we all make mistakes but you just have to read the regs more carefull and just when u think you read and know everything READ IT AGAIN! ;) The nic is a very cool ditch to fish but i found the fish i caught and kept(hatchery coho jacks) and cooked i found to taste muddy for some reason as apposed to keeping coho from other rivers thats don't taste muddy! Just remember again single BARBLESS HOOKS and NEVER KEEP WILD FISH EXCEPT FROM LAKES NEVER STREAMS OR RIVERS OR SLOUGHS! ever! Alot of members like to jump down ppls throats for little or big infractions keep that in mind! Maybe i'll see ya on the flow soon! Did you see lots of fish rise where you were fishing?

I wont jump on you like some of the mob well. I am glad it was posted here and not on one of the other forums as you certainly would have never lived it down. Its a mistake, all humans make mistakes. You live and learn from them.

As far as taking a test for a fishing license as much as it does sound like a great idea it wont fly. License sales would be WAY down. It would be more of an inconvenience for people. They don't want to take up a hobby like fishing and have to be tested for it. Less licenses means less fish. Is that what you want?

coho killer...  the  taste of the fish wasn't that bad... lots of garlic and lemon...  might of hid the "muddy" taste thanks for the tips on the regs.. i have  just read them throughly  and understand clearly  now... in region 8 there is no such restriction to keep wild trout...the majority of them  are wild.... i am sorry one again to those who feel i am a bad person i assure you it is the last time anything like this happens again...  as a young angler who wishes to learn it all i look at this site for advise and guidance... ohhh and coho killer there were lots of fish rising once the sun hit the horizon and turned the sky to that beautiful pinky orange color.... but none the less had the best day off in a while...

I for one am sick of the poaching and mistreatment I seen and often hear about on this river on a regular basis.Yes, I have reported this behavior to the authorities and I am glad to say I have seen fiheries on the river as a direct result.  I am also sick of seeing this river come up on posts on the internet, people should know better than to mention small streams with few fish on forums such as this one, it just attracts more poachers, and poluters, and general poor  fisherman thinking its a great spot to kill some wild fish and litter all over the bank because its a place where you are unlikley to get caught. This river has been treated porly enough in the past for ingnorant people to kick the river while it is down. People who post about small rivers with few fish are often poor fisherman who need to post thier success to get a pat on the back from someone, because for many the internet is the only place they can make people believe they are  a skilled fisherman, being recognized as a good angler in the "real" world takes far to much work for these types.Well I have news that should not be new to anyone on these boards, report on small streams with few fish and you wont make any friends. Such reports draw people that kill wild fish to small streams with few fish. There is no excuse, know the regs before you go. If you are new to the sport and dont want to read the regs because its too much trouble go to a river that is busy and has lots of fish so some real fisherman who know the rules will be there to call fisheries when you decide to kill a wild fish, instead odf going to a small stream by yourself and making up the rules as you go along. AND TO GLX BEST TO KEEP THOSE SECRETS TO YOURSELF UNLESS YOU LIKE TO FISH ANLONGSIDE MANY OTHERS WHO WILL SHOW UP WITHOUT LICENSES AND TAGS HOPING TO KILL ANYTHING THEY MAY ENCOUNTER DURING THE TIME OF WHICH YOU SPEAK.

and yes I know some of you will feel what I have said is harsh but the reality is that WILD FISH OR ANY FISH YOU ARE PROHIBITED FROM RETAINING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR FEELINGS. UNDUE PRESSURE DUE TO INTERNET POSTS ON SMALL RIVERS WITH FEW FISH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR FEELINGS. Internet board administrators need to take the attitude of being a responsible angler angler first and a internet board administraor second, and get rid of posts on small systems with few fish, doing so would lead to much less strife and argument and hopefully a few less prohibited fish from going home with a few ignorant anglers. For those who want a test before a license is doled out....well there is already a test. The test is if you care enough to read the regulations... unfortunatley too many people fail this test at the expense of everyone else.

Steelheadjunkie, you may not realize, but people complain about post of small rivers and larger rivers. People complain about the Thompson being reported on, or the Vedder, or the Chehalis, or Norrish. Every river report gets complaints from someone. For the administrators to delete any report that someone finds will ruin a river would leave us with no reports.

judging by your photo I believe I have met you on the Nick earlier this year. Misinterpretation of the regs is a big problem and is poaching. I met a guy earlier who didn't know the difference between a jack cocho or spring and killed a wild ho - swore it was a spring. learn from this. There are no excuses. I have fished the Nic for over 40 years - it can't sustain these  kind of error.

im not surprised..this has been happening regularly and posted on here regularly.... read the regs before you fish anywhere. and why you would want to keep a fish out of a small river like that is beyond my understanding.

Mistakes are ok... we all learn from them. I beleive at one time everyone learning to fish has bottom bounced, accidentally killed the wrong thing, etc. People just seem to not be able to remeber back to when they started. When I started learning I pretty much taught myself. It wasn't until last Steelhead season that I actually started getting good at short floating.  ;)

Here is one for you : 1st year of fishing a guy came up to me at a backwash and asked me if I wanted a nice chrome spring. Not knowing any better I said yes and took the fish and the guy promplty left upriver (still within sight). Started cleaning it and realized it had red meat. Then I realized it was a wild coho that the guy had just dumped on me  :o To make matters worse I got checked by DFO right after figuring it out, thankfully there were other people around that witnessed the guy giving me the fish and the DFO guy went upriver and wrote a ticket, and I got to keep the fish  ::) That by the way is the only time I have ever seen DFO on the river, figures  ::)  :o

Next time check the regs. And if you make a mistake, don't post it on the internet, people will slaughter you. We have seen it a good 5 times this year with people posting pics of Cultus Lake sockeye, wild coho, etc.
