Super Silex reel
« on: November 17, 2009, 09:17:50 PM »

I want to get into Steelhead fishing this year and I was wondering about some reels I have. When my grandpa passed away awhile back I took on all his tackle, rods and reels. Among it are two Super Silex reels made in England by Hardy Bros, I know he and my uncle used to fish steels on this gear. So my question is would you have the reels worked on and fish with it or hold onto them and buy a newer reel.
I'll post some pictures later on if anyone is interested in seeing what I'm talking about, along with a few of the other reels I have.

Yeah I've been told they can be worth money, I wouldnt sell them though.
No original boxes though. they're stored in some leather reel pouches.

Any of ther original Silex reels (major, super, suberba) should last you a life time.  Can't speak about the last model out "Silex" but I've been using my Superba that my dad gave me back in 1964 at Christmas when I was nine to the tune of several dozen times per year and it is still my go to reel.  My islander steelheader is my backup and just collects dust because of how reliable those extremely well made reels are.  My dad fished a major and my uncle fished the super and both reels outlasted them.

Don't put those reels up on a mantel...fish them!

The Silexes as mentioned are quality reels-the Peetz and the South Bend have only sentimental value.

As its been said in previous posts great reels to fish with, when you spool them up put some backing on first the spools can pop if you don't. Been fooling around with the camera settings the last couple days and thought I'd throw up a pic of my Super's. Love collecting them as well as fishing with them .
