RECREATIONAL - Salmon
Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Subject: FN0511-Recreational - Salmon - Region 2 (non-tidal waters of the Fraser River) - Fraser River Spring (age 5-2) and Summer (age 5-2) Chinook
Further to FN0489 the in season prediction of Chinook returns to the Fraser
River through June 15th is approximately 47,000. Given the uncertainty about
the in season estimated return to the Fraser River, the Department plans to
implement management actions consistent with zone 2 after July 15, 2012.
Specific management actions announced previously to protect Fraser Spring 4-2
chinook will remain in effect until July 15, 2012 when greater than 70% of the
Spring 4-2 Chinook run has entered the Fraser.
All retained Chinook must be at least 30 cm.
Effective at one hour before sunrise Monday, July 16 and until one hour
after sunset Friday July 27, 2012, in those waters of the Fraser River in
Region 2 (non-tidal Fraser) the daily limit for wild or hatchery marked chinook
salmon is one (1) per day with a minimum length of 30 cm and a maximum length
of 77 cm.
Effective one hour before sunrise Saturday, July 28 and until one hour
after sunset Friday, August 31, 2012, in those waters of the Fraser River in
Region 2 (non-tidal Fraser), the daily limit for wild or hatchery marked
chinook salmon is four (4) per day only one of which can be greater than 50 cm.
Effective one hour before sunrise Saturday, September 1 and until one
hour after sunset Monday, December 31, 2012, in those waters of the Fraser
River in Region 2 (non-tidal Fraser), the daily limit for wild or hatchery
marked chinook salmon is four (4) per day only one of which can be greater than
62 cm.
This is also a reminder that fishing for salmon in the waters of the Fraser
River in Region 2 are open during daylight hours only. Consult your local
newspaper for sunrise and sunset times.

Sport anglers and guides are reminded to label and submit heads from adipose
fin-clipped (hatchery-marked) Chinook and Coho salmon to the Salmon Head
Recovery Program. Recovery of coded-wire tags from recreational fishers
provides critical information for coast-wide stock assessment. For more

Yargh... It be near time to continue the great hunt for the might tshawytscha! Blast though, with a height of the river being the highest its been in nigh half a century up in Fort George, I be a reasoning that it won't be until My crew does feast for St. Lawrence the Martyr! Yargh!!!! Though I suspect the river will be full of swabbers trying to floss themselves a fine tshawytscha! Ma har har har!!!
No flossing threads this year or you will be made to walk the plank. ;D ;D ;D

The title is very misleading. Chris.
What you meant to say is that Chinook open on July 28th.
The 2 weeks with the size limit is a joke. I wouldn't waste my time.
Not to mention, I've seen more guys keeping any size they catch regardless.
I've seen others drag them up the bank and then spend 5 minutes trying to measure fish that are clearly over the size limit.
Realistically I would rather they just not open it at all until they are prepared to let us keep any large chinook.

What do they mean when they say spring 5-2 and summer 5-2? im assuming it means age?
Thanks.
-
i will be very happy to get a spring under 77cm.anytime. i think 5-2 means 2-5 yr old.

A 5-2 is a 5 year old fish that has spent 1+ years in freshwater. On the Fraser those are generally the fish that spawn in streams upriver from the Thompson but that is not a hard and fast rule. Birkenhead, Spius, Chilcoltin and Quesnel are examples of fish that spen a year in freshwater before smolting. A Harrison chinook is normally a 4-1 ( 4 years of age and migrated to the ocean in it's first year).
