chehalis river Dec 1/ 2015
« on: December 03, 2015, 10:10:01 AM »

Hit the canyon at first light water was really low but gave it a shot anyways. My buddy and I didnt get into any coho and only saw a handfull sitting there. We did get into 4 nice size cutties on a jig. We then decided to walk down river below the hatchery and saw more fish in some deep water. Managed to hook 2 fish  but only landed 1 hatchery coho on roe. Slow day but it was nice to get out.

Yeah i was a bit surprised at the number of fish up there. Even the chum numbers are down. We hiked atleast 3km down from the hatchery before we saw anything and even then the numbers were low.

The lower was completely infested with chums a month ago. Absolutely full of them.
I kept one for the first time, not as bad as people say. very similar to pink
not a lot of cohos though...

It's to bad cuz it's  such a beautiful river to fish. Its been a weird year on that river. Usually the chum are up in the canyon too. Hopefully the steelheading will make up for the coho fishing.

I doubt it. I heard they accidently killed the hatchery fish that would be returning this year.

I have to agree that the numbers of fish I saw this year were well below what I've seen since I've been fishing it (not saying too much as I am a lot younger than most of you). I remember seeing piles of fish in some areas that would only hold 10-15 fish this year. But at the same, I had my best year by far. To think of it, fishing really was amazing this year with no too much pressure at all in the areas I fished. At the same time, I did not see many fish caught by others at all. Saw one guy catch 3 on the other side from me in October and two younger guys land 2 in the tail of the section I was fishing and that was it. A lot of the guys I talked to weren't touching fish. And again, saw virtually a handful of fish in the several times I walked into the canyon in the afternoons.

They weren't killed, there was a mishap at the hatchery and due to the incident all fish were released into the Stave instead.

Can you elaborate on this? This is the first I've heard. (Not that I'm in the know)

Heard it through the grape vine...

Basically there was a possibility that some Stave fry ended up in the Chehalis fry (or vise versa) while a count or some sort of assessment was being done to the fry.
