posession limit
« on: October 18, 2015, 09:21:49 PM »

Regulations state that the possession limit is usually twice the daily limit.
That is clear. They also say that this is EXCEPT for your permanent residence.
My question is how many fish are you allowed at that permanent residence?
That would include canned, smoked and frozen fish or fillets.
Is there or is there not a double the daily limit at home?

There is no limit to how many fish you can keep at your permanent residence.

Where does it say that? I would like to see it in black and white. It does not specify in the regulation as far as I can see.
The reason I'm asking is because a fellow fisherman said he was told by a fisheries officer at the sportsman show that the limit at home was double the daily limit.
If that is correct I would think that there are a lot of us that could be called poachers if our residences were checked.

FA is right (he never has that problem anyway ;D ), and the second sentence "EXCEPT for your permanent residence" should reassure you that you can have more than your possession quota at home. Whatever was told at the sportsmen show to your friend was incorrect, or he interpreted the answer wrongly.

Thanks, but where does it actually state how many you can have at home?
It should be written somewhere otherwise are we are subject to any ones interpretation as to how may we can have?
Is it double the daily limit, 10x. 100x can any one give me an  exact number?

Annual possession limit for salmon would be 365 days x 4 fish = 1460 fish and that's not counting the trout LOL. You wanted a number so there you go :D
I had to do a freezer inventory the other day because I'm fast approaching that number and it's not even steelhead season yet :D
Just joking of course and as others already stated there is no such thing as defined freezer limit. DFO hardly has the manpower to enforce rules on the water so what's to say about freezer raids.

I've always wondered abut the folks who buy the dozen or so sockeye from the roadside bandits and what would they say if checked.

I wonder what officer would have told someone that there is a possession limit at home???  Even if there was how would they prove that the fish (likely processed) was caught by the home owner?  It could have been given to them by someone (I give away lots of fillets to family and friends) or bought from a store and re-packaged into freezer packs.  It's a moot point, as there's zero risk of a home inspection by DFO for all practical purposes.

This does not mean you can catch your daily limit, go home, throw it in freezer and go back to the river and retain any more.

They have caught people doing that before:
Caught their limit
Went home
Came back
Killed more fish and the officer there recognized them from the first trip.

Thank goodness. For a moment there I was worried about someone finding all those frozen body parts in my freezer. ::)

Good point! And it may not just be an officer that recognizes the culprit. Other anglers could be witnesses too!

True enough.
It's not always a lights and siren take down for poachers.
And sometimes those phone calls actually bring some folk who forgot to wear their flashing hats.
Just cuz you call an infraction in doesn't mean you'll see a flashing light and uniforms.
Some folks are actually followed home and sometimes you don't know who is actually fishing beside you.

Is that guy on the cell phone (these days) talking to a friend or the guy with binoculars on the other side of the river?
