We went for a boat ride from Gill road down the Fraser to the mouth of he Harrison and up the Harrison above the Highway bridge almost to the mountain.
Once we hit the Harrison we started to see dead sockeye floating in the river. We have been out on the Fraser 4 days this week and maybe saw half a dozen dead fish floating downstream. In the half hour on the Harrison, we probably saw 15.
Is the parasite that caused problems a few years back prevalent again? These fish looked normal - not chewed on or moldy like old boot chums.

That could be a possibility and hopefully DFO will gather up some of these dead sockeye to see what did them in. Very hot today in Chilliwack, as it is a balmy 34 degrees Celsius .

Could be Parvicapsula minibicornis in Anadromous Sockeye, it attacks the kidneys.
I covered this for Global TV a few years ago.

Another thing...
Water is over 19 C right now on the Fraser, anything over 18 C starts becoming lethal for sockeye.
If they have been hooked and played out in this warm weather I could see them dieing.

These were in the Harrison river. The water temp in the Harrison should be cooler than the Fraser.
Chris- as far as people catching their 2 and going home. It sure looked like it, as we cruised down from Gill at 2pm and there was not nearly as many people actually fishing as there was on Friday. Either that or it was just too hot.

Fish will fall out of nets...did you see net marks on them?
Was impressed to see the natives working a net around hunter creek on wednesday...every 15 minutes they would run it. Hate the thought of fish dieing in a net and falling out so it was good to see a proper effort.

I always enjoy seeing people utilizing the resource respectfully. There are so many people out there that treat the resource with respect and don't abuse/break the rules. It's unfortunate we only hear the negatives and thus form prejudice.

100% agree. Not only lethal for sox but other salmonoids as well as Steelhead.
Fished the Deschutes late July and water temps were flirting with being too high too target steelies.
Temps in the Columbia/Deschutes mouth were cooler and fishing was quite good. Into several players ;)
I wont' get into it like the flossing thread but anglers should be cognizant of fishing certain speices in warm water temps.
Mortality greatly increases with higher water temps. Ethics again. LOL

We didn't notice any net marks or bites of any kind on these fish.

Reports coming in today, lots of morts coming out of the Harrison River.

I also saw two dead sockeye along the banks of the Thompson on sunday while out fly fishing for rainbows.
Other than being dead they looked fine, far from being ready to spawn.

I saw several dead sockeye floating by on the Fraser today around the hope area. one was very coloured up, one had bad marks from nets and the last one looked fine other than dead.
With alot of fish dying it's possible they may close the sockeye run to anglers I'm guessing?

anytime you have mass migration of any species there will be death.

compared to the number of fish that are traveling the river right now the runs should be ok with a few deaths. I sure do hope the temp come down a bit though. It was 41 fishing the thompson for bows on sunday
BNF861 - how did you do on the thompson? we found it a little slow

I would think the fishing would be a little slow if it was 41 Celsius during the day. The trout would be hunkered down in the deep pools just trying to survive. When temps get that brutal, better to fish in the evening or the early morning.

Most likely Parvicapsula as Chris has mentioned. These late run Harrison fish are entering the system far too early. Temperature shouldn't be a problem . I was at Harrison Lake today and noticed dead
sockeye floating in the lake.

I didn't think it was that bad this year for dead sockeye floating down the river,last year there was alot more.

Not too deadly hot yet and predicted to cool over the next week or so.

The 10 or 20 dead fish wev'e all seen is of no concern considering the run size; it's probably less than 1% morts...
Think of all the fish sport anglers take AND not to mention play out that later die...THAT is of more concern.

Last year same thing happend DFO went around and counted them after marking them with a mechaty
