Hi

Iam looking to setup my a 4" Silex CP with the "go to" setup from the 1980's-1990's.

I remember seeing a rod for sale a a few years ago that paired the Silex with a yellow(fiberglass) cp rod.

Was it a Fenwick?

The picture in question was a blurry shot of a couple guys in yellow rain coats holding the rods.

I also hear that the sage 3113 brown was the way to back then. But that is $$$ and I can't find a blank.

However I would love to find a traditional vedder silex rod setup for nostalgia.

Currently Iam using a Shimano Technium 10'6 med. slow action 12-20lb.

What was your setup for a 4" Silex in the 80s-90s ? Or currently with a older blank ?

Thanks !

I think the Silex dates backs a littler earlier and in the 80s and 90s starting to go out of fashion in favour of bait casters. Islander helped bring back the CP.

I bought my Silex in 1974. Favoured rods were the Redls (yellow glass) and Hardy 10-10s. The Richmake Rods usually also yellow glass  were also well liked.

1263,1264 Fenwick yellow fibreglass blanks were what all the "cool kids" had back then!

I have my original set up from the late 60's early 70's.
it's a 9.5' Richmake centerpin rod, yellow fibreglass blank with red wraps & black trim with a black 1962 JW Young Seldex.
Got it strung up with one of the original cork floats, pencil lead in surgical tubing and #8 pink spin n glow!

If I recall the brown blank Fenwick 1262 was the rod wanted by most anglers.  You still see a few around and they feel like clubs compared to today's  quality graphite rods :D
The best Silex's were of course the Jewel's and Supers in 3 3/4 "

I saw a feed on Facebook this morning mentioning a bunch of Brown Sage 3113 blanks and completes for sale this weekend. Believe it was SeaRun that was posting it, and I believe it was $300 for a blank and $700 for a complete build. Give them a shout.

Awesome! Thanks everyone. Keep them coming.

The sage 3113 is out my price range and I have a plethora of graphite cp rods so I may have to check out the fenwick glass rod.

I like a slow feel anyways.

I used a Hardy 10/10 mooching rod with my Silex.
Now I use a Sage with my Silex.

The best Silex's were of course the Jewel's and Supers in 3 3/4 "

You see a few sporting those vintage 3.75" Silex'es. Very neat but boy do those look tiny. I have a regular 4" Silex that I have now retired to the display cabinet because even that was too small (and wide) for my liking and IMHO just doesn't perform up to the level of a modern reel.

It's bad enough with a 4.75" reel, but with a 4" or 3.75" I'd feel like I'm spending way more time reeling than fishing...
