I took the boyfriend out today for his first time out steelheading this year... We started down around Lickman from the campground side, and there were people everywhere...
Moved up to curtains, chatted with homeowner there for a bit, and still no action. He was so nice and easygoing, very plesant! He offered to take a photo for us:

Moved up to the mid river, and I lost one on the spey rod; It came as a total shock with all the cold weather, I didn't expect to hook one.
First one on the new rod, lots of fun! Here's a photo of me playing it... 4th time she came out of the water, she came off.

My boyfriend broke his flyrod early on in the day, so I gave him the gear rod, taught him how to use it, and he picked up the free spooling concept very fast, a great learner...
And what do you know, he got his first steelhead ever today (first time ever using a levelwind and first fish ever caught float fishing), check out the beast!

The fish was an easy 16, maybe 17... A brute of a fish. The guys around him were amazed at it's size... It was wild, and went back in. I told him in all my years on the vedder, I have only caught 2 fish that large.
Better yet was the look on his face, couldn't wipe the grin off, I think it's still there right now :)
Cheers,
Nicole

-
Congrat to you,nice pictures
-
Nice metalhead Nicoles....boyfriend ::) :D
Its always great to get someone hooked on the first day!!! Which seems to be especially hard during winter run steelheading(ie. the weather).
We really coulda used a couple of those biggens out at the derby!! :'( ;)
-
great report, pics and a monster steelie.
-
VERY NICE,WOW WOW WEE WOW !
-
Beautiful looking fish, did you guys hook into it on the lower end?
-
WOW nice fish Nicole :)
-
I still cant believe a guy who has never float fished before gets a steelhead on his first trip! Impressive......lucky?
-
Great story and nice fish Nicole, sounds like you two had a fabulous time. I can certainly believe he caught his first fish, first day and first time with a baitcaster because I believe totally in beginners luck.
Seen it way to many times to discount it whether its fishing, poker or just general gambling. Must be the energy thats given off by newbies. I know the first time I took Dorthy out and she used a baitcaster for the very first time she outfished all the old pros by hooking and landing four cohos. Go Figure :o.
-
Wow! Congrats on the fish - beautiful :)
-
Nice work Nicole...and congrats to the boyfriend on his first steelie, what a brute! I'm getting a deja vu feeling... ;)
-
Nicole, do you have a multi-tip line for the spey rod?

Sometimes it's just dumb luck...however if you have an accomplished angler backing a green angler by pointing them in the right direction and they hook a fish is that beginners luck or just good direction?
Do guides rely on beginners luck for getting clients into fish? Sorry to hi-jack.....great fish!
-
nice fish,sweet.
-
Great job Nicole, he must still be grining from ear to easr now!! What a beast for a first steely as well. Isn't that always the way though!! ;D Congrats to him! :)
-
Cograts to both of you, sounds like a great day on the water.
-
Nicole, do you have a multi-tip line for the spey rod?
I just purchased the Rio Skagit line, and I'm using my old Rio Midspey tips with it, as I've been finding the T-14 that I had been using was sinking too quickly and was getting hung up non stop.
The type 6 has been working out much better for me... Especially as the fish can be in tight when the water is as murky as it is...
Cheers,
Nicole

He had on my special jensen egg/wool thing, Rodney is the only one has a copy, other than my dad of course.
I put four colors of wool on it, chartreuse, white, light pink, and hot pink, in that order... Then a pink jensen egg, size 2. I cut the wool to size to match conditions. No need to use anything else, it's been working for 20 years, and is used 98% of the time...
If anyone wants to see it, I can take a photo... Just let me know.

There weren't any others caught that I saw... I didn't expect to get in there, but got lucky... It's only going to get worse for people when things warm up, and more fish arrive... Enjoy it while it lasts.

I think the key is the afternoon right now, when things warm up a bit, but that's just my theory...
I'm sure Thickrick would disagree :)

Exactly my point Nicole...You know what presentation to use and where to fish in certain water conditions.
If he was outfitted at canadian tire and trotted down to the river alone with his 7 foot spinning rod, snelled bait holder hooks, red & white bobber, a piece of bacon and hooked 3 fish then it would be fair to say it was beginners luck. Much the same with many of the male night club go'ers of Vancouver. Hence the term "getting lucky" ;D

Heh, you reminded me of a guy who was really trying hard to pick me up at the old parking area in front of the Easter Seal run one year, but you left out the gumboots :D
-
I would say the best catch he made was you my dear...maybe that's what put the smile on his face...fish is secondary!!! :o ;D
-
Fishfreak, here is the wool thing:
I swear it's all I use 98% of the time on the vedder (when fishing gear of course)...
Too cold to mess around with roe for me, I have baaad circulation in my hands.
Some more angles shot here:

Minus the barb of course ;)
So I guess that you got him into a steelhead he now owes you a ring :o
J/K :D
-
heh, yes of course I pinch my barbs, you're looking at a fresh one :)
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to tell him that, I'll tell him you guys said so ;)
Cheers,

Tell him I said nothing less than 3 ct diamond. ;) They have a Tiffany's in Vancouver now I am sure they can hook him up LOL
-
Now its actually fun.
-
The crappy water is good for fish to move past the lower river untouched, making them available in pocket water in mid river where I roam. Heehaw! ;D
-
Great job Nicole and awesome report, the look on his face says it all despite a downed fly rod, as for the wool tie it looks wicked, I'm gonna have to give that a try.
Thanks Scruffy

Pretty fish and nicely colored,
thanks for sharing

Nicole,
Do you think weighted popsicle-type flies or Squamish Poachers should be ok for the water conditions now?
-
Nicole,
Do you think weighted popsicle-type flies or Squamish Poachers should be ok for the water conditions now?
The fish I hooked was on a lead bead weighted popsicle... So my answer to that would be yes :)
But keep in mind that some runs have fish laying quite shallow, say 2.5 feet, so be sure to try a close to shore swing first with a type 3 tip... The murky conditions allow them to feel much more comfortable in shallower water.
I've been focusing on some pretty heavy current to allow my type 6 to not get hung up, but still allow the fly to get down, all the while standing in a position that is more upstream so the fly does not swing too fast.
I'm doubtful the fish would be doing much chasing right now... So your presentation needs to follow suit. Slow it down to allow for a reaction...
And one other thing, try tying some General Practitioners instead of squamish poachers, they have a more slender profile, and you should tie lots of patterns in dark colors such as black and purple to increase contrast... First they have to see your pattern, then they have to have the time to react to it.
Good Luck!
Nicole

Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely take the speyrod along next time. If my casting is too rusty, I can strap on the centrepin and have a 15 ft float rod.
-
Nice going Nichole and Boyfriend (fiance to be) ;D
Daveg as for your comments
I hooked my first steelie on my own
1 i picked my own water to fish,
2 my own set up,
3 my own bait
4 it was my first time steelie fishing ;D
only no one near to take a pic
i did keep it as it was a hatch
only problem was it was 9.30am
so a short day fishing but worth the gas

I fished above there and other side using my nymphing strategy's..which is boring as hell...so I switched spools and went with my sink tips and swinging...It was the first time I've lost half my line on the river...the head hung up on I'm assuming a log and wrapped around it tight, busted my sink tip in half and ruined the loop to loop connector on my Rio line...that was an easy fix and I had to buy a new sink tip...so lesson learned...I'm thinking the clear head when the water clears and warms...
-
I can't add anything that hasn't already been said Nicole, except WOW!!! You taught him well. ;D
He's hooked now I bet!
cheers

Clear tip will be good in march and april , especially in the canal part of the river, but till then type 6 and type 3 is the way to go depending on the water you are fishing. If u keep snagging up you are fishing too deep..so just change to a light sinktip or if u are using a weighted fly u can change to an unwaited fly.
Catchin a winter steelhead is a challenge even to the best rods out there so don't expect to catch to many in jan and feb. You might want to get Dec Hogan's Book " A Passsion for Steelhead" lots of good info in there that can help you in your quest...
Another thing u can do is to get yourself a spey or twohanded rod. This can really help in your catch rate as well.
Thinking back, i wonder how i could have used a single hander before.
