Chilliwack River, January 25th & 26th 2014
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:15:33 PM »

The water was great and as previously mentioned with a steelhead green tint. Saw 4 steelhead hooked and landed Saturday but action was slow Sunday with only 1 hook up and a couple jumpers.  Must have been all the rods out Saturday that had them scared Sunday.

Agree it is a slow year so far. Was there for half a day with nothing and saw nothing. People I talked to also saw nothing. Hope February brings more fish.

No love for us today either. Saw one hooked across the river among quite a few fishers.

Im not sure how good a measuring stick Fred's derby is but it would lead one to believe there is a fraction of the fish out there this year compared to last. Last year, through January there were over 150 weighed in. So far this year, 60 something fish weighed in.

Bad news considering how many people I talked to last year that complained about it being such a slow year.

It appeared 2010/11 was much more productive at this time of year. A lot of people posted 3-4 hook ups per day compared to one or two this year.

Yeah, This is the worst season. hundreds of guys out a day and just a handful of fish being caught, hardly worth it. But nice to be out.

The poor returns of hatchery fish were expected but sadly it seems very few wilds are being reported as well, other than those being held now at the Chilliwack River Hatchery.  With water conditions the way they are and expected to be into the near future, most hatchery steelhead entering this river will be picked off by anglers long before they reach mid river.  Anglers know this and will target the lower river which will of course increase the interception of wild fish.
Still early, and for sure more fish will arrive, but we won't know until late April and May how this season really fares for the remaining wild fish in this system.
Best to be very careful in releasing what wild fish you catch :D

I'm giving Vedder steelhead a break this year.
Hopefully they will rebound and next season is a good one.

I have been doing fairly well with at least a fish every 2 outings now.
Seen quite a few hooked last week and this week only a couple mentioned.
Seems to be coming in waves and then a dead spot till more rain happens. From what I have seen the water levels have been on the low side for most  of the steelhead season with not many big rains

Love your optimism Brian! Rather than waves I would call it trickles of new fish.
Just curious here, to all anglers ... when was the last hatchery fish you have seen above the Vedder bridge?
