2015's Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley catchable rainbow trout stocking started on March 11th. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/gofishbc/index.html), is responsible for stockings of these fish between March and June, September and November, so fishing is expected to be excellent during these months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.
As usual, we will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html).

REGULATIONS
Before heading out, please be aware of the followings:
- You must have a valid BC freshwater angling license (http://www.fishing.gov.bc.ca).
- You are permitted to keep four trout in Region 2 lakes, unless stated otherwise in lake-specific regulations. Lafarge, Como, Green Timbers, Deer, Rice, Mill Lake now have a two fish per day limit!
- If fishing from shore, only ONE fishing rod/line is permitted for each angler.
- If fishing alone in a boat, an angler is allowed to use TWO fishing rods/lines.
- Only ONE hook is allowed on each fishing line.
- There are exceptions/specific regulations for some lakes (such as catch and release only, requirement of barbless hook, boating restrictions), please see the table in Region Two's regulations (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/) where each lake is listed for exceptions.
- If you witness a violation, please phone 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) and report it.

Rod, do you know if the above lakes were stocked over the last couple of days? Just checked GoFishBC, and its not updated yet...
Thanks
-
Lafarge, Como, Green Timbers, Rice and Hastings were stocked a couple of days ago.
-
Was at Rice this afternoon to kill a couple hours. No sign of life. Had bubble float/fly, 1/8 rooster tail, float with powerbait worm deep and shallow, bottom fishing with shrimp fishers on dock.
Also saw about 20 dead trout just off the railing on the west side of the dock. They were all of good size. Glad to see they're stocking with good sized fish. Must be shock.
Lots of little grommets out having a good time though.
-
Same in Lafarge. 3 kids with rods in the water and not a solitary bite over three hours. Spoke to a number of people there and nobody was getting any hook ups. Kids still had a blast tho.
-
I have never caught fish right after it was stocked. I am almost sure it takes a bit for the fish to adjust to the new surroundings.
-
Fish will bite anytime once they are released into the lake, 15 minutes after or a week later, just gotta figure out what tick them off...
-
I seem to remember years ago (in the 90's) they used to stock places like the Coquitlam river, Brunette river etc with Catch-able trout. Does anyone know why that stopped?
-
Tried Rice Lake tonight. Both of us on fly, fishing with the usual infallables, green/olive/black buggers and leeches. I usually pick up a few fish with these even when others are not getting anything. Fished for 1.5 hours, no bites and surprising did not see one fish rise. Usually for a 2-3 weeks after stocking you see a lot of surface activity.
-
Was at Rice today most of afternoon. Nice day to picnic. Bites came on an hour before dark, coincided with surface activity. Before that nothing. Judging from where I was fishing and my last few outings this year, I'm almost positive these aren't the recently stocked fish.
From previous years, if I showed up the day of the stocking, it was pretty much a fish every cast as long on the lure was moving.
After that it was feast or famine. And usually a week or so after stocking, more often than not stationary offering under a float worked best for me.
-
I remember when I was younger, Rice would have loads of fish that winter over and get very healthy. I would fish it before the first stocking and we would catch a lot of the bigger fish, darker colour to them and nice pink flesh. Almost as if the stocked fish that end up not getting caught and winter over change somehow.

Last week's numbers are now on:

Any ideas for mil lake? Thinkin this week probably judging by camparing last years stocking vs this years
Trolling around a small leech, wooly bugger has been successful for me there. Been years since I fished this lake though and I know many that do great on chironies.
I really should try this lake for the bass in summer
-
Anyone know if mill got stocked yet?
Not yet Aaron, soon, but you should be able to catch plenty in there already.
-
Any idea if Alice is going to be stocked this year... So many memories and now I understand it has water quality issues
-
You ask that every year, the stocking plan tells you which lakes will be stocked and how many fish are designated for each.
http://www.gofishbc.com/docs/default-source/future-fish-stocking-plans/2015_region_2_stocking_plan.pdf?sfvrsn=2
-
Thanks Rod. I had no idea they released this plan. Some of us spend less time than others with this highly addictive sport so we may not be as well versed as you are.
Afterall, I thought the benefit and reason for forums is to share knowledge with other people with similar interests.
Appreciate your help and my apologies if this took to much of your time. Alice Lake is a place that is very near and dear to my heart. it has provided me with a lot of memories and I plan to pass these on to my kids.
All the best

lol people are free to ask questions. I just don't understand why you're asking the same question and me providing the same answer each year.

Are there any lakes that are gonna get stocked this weekend?
Stockings do not take place on weekends and I'm not aware of any stockings this past week.
-
have they stopped stocking Hayward, Hicks and Deers (Sasquatch Park) with Taylor cutthroat altogether? Looks like the last time was 2010.
-
That's correct Ralph. FFSBC has changed its stocking strategy for Hicks and Deer for a few years now. Taylor 3N's are no longer stocked there, only Fraser Valleys are now. Alta and Jones are your best options if you want to target these cutthroats.
-
I wonder if they will stock Alice Lake this year? :)

Makes no sense Aaron... It's like you were trying so hard to make a joke that it didn't come out right. Just because you have Alice lake and stocked in a sentence it's not funny . You should of took a little more time and come up with a good joke.... But that actually has no humor.
-
I laughed ;D
-
good one ^x2^
-
Not yet Aaron, soon, but you should be able to catch plenty in there already.
Should be decent chironomid fishing there this time of the year.
Try the deep water near the east end of the lake.
I frequently do a "tune-up" trip there in April to make sure all my gear is working properly before a main trip in May.

Any stocking before the long weekend??? :P

I'll bring this up next time at the meeting. Buntzen and Sasamat etc are expected to be stocked next week.

Thanks Rodney,
This springs allocations of catchable sized fish is to be 52,050 total. The five urban ponds will get 23,000 of these fish which is 44% of the total!! Out of the 35 managed lakes 12 will not receive any catchables at all. Another way to state it is; 14.1% of the lakes will receive 44% of the catchable sized fish. This is excessive to say the least, and needs to be addressed. It is understood that these 5 urban ponds provide fishing to a higher population density and should receive more allocation than some lakes farther afield, but not to the extent of being detrimental to the fishing experience they can potentially offer.
-
They need to start stocking Trout lake in Vancouver and latimer Lake again too.
-

I think the problem they have with trout lake in Van, is the coliform count is very high. I would conjecture that they don't want to stock it with catchables, for fear people will eat them and get sick.
I'm not sure what the situation with Latimer lake is.
-
There must be a way to filter some of those small lakes, Trout lake is such a waste with a beach and all...

Need to elect a Mayor that is more into angling instead of cycling in order for that to happen ;D

I've updated the stocking database:

Some more stockings happened this week, will update again when those numbers come to me.

Hicks and Deer at Sasquatch Park were stocked this week, so was Deer in Burnaby.

That "line" does not exist. Those lakes are put in take fisheries. Often by the time the week has ended the fishing is slow or at a complete standstill, even with a 2 fish/day limit trying to increase angling opportunities.
Besides Urban lakes can keep there catchables, if they go into interior lakes it often means they killed...

" if they go into interior lakes it often means they killed..." ???
translation please !!

I don't think he was referring to the interior lakes. Just the other lakes in the valley that aren't in the middle of town/s.

Seriously why do they even bother stocking Deer Lake in Burnaby anymore? It is ruined by the bucket brigade. I know it can not be poisoned due to salmon passing through but now it is just a course fishing lake for Carp, Bass etc...The trout that go in there would be better used elsewhere.

Deer Lake in Burnaby offers a much better fishing day experience than any of the five urban poaching ponds. I fish it as my default lake when I don't feel like a long drive. It is much larger than any of the urban ponds and has great access for car toppers or float tubes. Because of its size you can get away from all the shore casters where they cannot cast out to. Last spring I had some really fun days out there and very decent trout fishing. I did catch some small bass close to shore but none out deeper. I do not agree that it has been ruined, nor is it only a carp / bass fishery. I know this to be the case because I fish Deer Lake in the spring numerous times. Also Deer Lake only gets stocked once in the spring because it does get too warm in the summer, so its allocation of trout is not a waste as it gets fished out by early summer. Burbot, try fishing for a day out on the water at either Lafarge Lake or Como Lake, and then go and launch at Dear Lake and just experience the difference, there is no comparison.

Tried Rice Lake this weekend, as my Daughter wanted to catch a trout. Having never participated in any urban fishery, I thought I should research how to...even for a thought to be easy, and novice water hole.
Saturday:
stayed in one shoreline spot. Gradual slope, quiet, not too deep. Tried worm, chartruse, red powerbait on float, plunking with same, and 3 purpose bought small spinner/spoon.
The spot 30 feet beside me, older seasoned guy C&R about 10 fish every 2nd or 3rd cast. I didn't ask but think he was using a dark fly or plastic leach. Then, new group shows up and although not as productive, and with zero finesse...caught 4 or 5 rather easily. Also, a few caught in other spots across lake.
Left discouraged. My idea of not going to the trout farm today and fish here instead, was brought up for discussion. My popularity score decreased dramatically.
Sunday:
in preparation to increase my chances, I purchased a small reel to better match my ultralight rod and improve casting distance, and spooled on some 4lb mono. Picked up a Panther Martin and rooster tail ala Brian Chan, and couple others, some deli shrimp, and some cheese marshmallows...how could the rainbows resist this offering?
Previous spots already taken, but noticed at the hot spot the novice family had several fish already caught, and looked to only be using powerbait with their newly acquired Army & Navy purchases...they did have trout scent though. Is this the secret?
Found another nice spot similar to yesterday's, and tried the same techniques with the previous and new offerings. I could cast much farther now, but still needed to add a small sliding bullet weight to the 1/16 and 1/8 gear to get it out and sink a bit...nothing except 3 picked up by others across the way.
Tried another spot. Very nice, deep, with lots of hiding spots for the fish. Again tried everything to no avail. Even when the sun changed and cast a shadow directly in front of our spot, where I started to see dozens of risers...nothing. I was throwing everything at this pool of fish and short of a little nudge with the shrimp...nothing.
My observations are that the trout congregate in the dark areas of the lake which moves around depending at the time of day. The water is cold and not totally clear so I didn't think it would matter so much. I didn't try the dock...it just was just too sunny and bright.
Also, it can't be a coincidence that the hot spot is so productive. Could there be a deep pool there that the majority of fish stay in regardless of the sun? It is a 30 foot circle in one spot of the lake where I saw 90% of the fish caught.
I don't want to give up on Rice Lake yet...what can I do differently?
-
well. I could only recommend tipping your spinners with a bit of worm. real worm....
if your only using one rod while fishing with your daughter, bring another rod. you can play with presentations with one rod. then use the other rod with some bait on the bottom.
lastly, I would check the gofish bc website and try some lakes that were stocked last year that aren't so urban. theres a few in the fraser valley that fished very well for me this spring, with zero pressure and aggressive fish. small, scrappy and easy to catch.
hopefully you get into a few fish. and your daughter doesn't think fishing is "boring"

We actually did have two rods going with dew worm on most gear, only excluding on the ones that worm messed with the action.
We will check out some other lakes also, but would be nice to catch a few so close to home if I can figure out what were not doing correctly. I still think there is a honey hole in one particular spot in that lake.
She says we are very unlucky...I said fishing is mostly knowledge based and we need to persevere.
Thanks for the tip...

They really should stock Browning soon one of the few lakes that haven`t been stocked, some lakes have all ready been stocked TWICE.... :-\
-
There should still be some trout in browning. Popped by on the way home from camping in Pemberton and there was a ton of surface action.

-
Buntzen and Sasamat were stocked on April 7th.
Regarding the stock allocation we talked about, I don't really have much to say right now as the public advisors don't meet until the end of the year to review the year's operation. What I can say is that the five urban lakes currently receive a lot more fish because of all the programs (learn to fish, rod loaning, BC family fishing weekend) which take place at these lakes beside the higher angling pressure compared to other lakes.

I've been twice to Rice this year now, with my 4 year old. Every other year it's been too productive for me ;-) Now i'm taking the boy we've been skunked twice. For a 4 yo he has the patience of a saint, and after 1.5 hrs and I say we are leaving, he's sad because he doesn't want to go home to his Mum without a fish :-)
