Title: Carp fishing
Post by: Will_CARP on April 26, 2009, 03:27:44 PM
Hello fellow carp fishers, tried Ladner sloughs the past couple of weeks but no fish.  Where in the lower mainland can I try my luck this evening?

I had read somewhere about a guy that was canoeing in Burnaby lake. He disturbed a bunch of resting carp and they were so big, when they took off under him, they almost tipped his canoe. This could just be a fish story, but I know that there are alot of big carp in that lake!

Detinitely not a story they are there!

I read a similar story and thought I would check it out so I took my inflatable there and rowed out to the lily pads opposite the rowing launch deck.  Not only did I see them activly foraging amongst the liliies but they would occasionally shoot out from under my raft torpedo style - quite dramatic.   They were not monsters - maybe 5lb or so but big enough to stir up the water a lot.

Unfortunately I did not know how to get a line to them because there were so many lilly pads around I was just getting snagged up.  Maybe tossing a bait just before the lilly pads start would work but I have no experience fishing for carp from a boat.  They seem pretty skittish so my guess is you would need to make as little noise as possible.

As for Katzie - I saw a lot of largish fish splashing the surface there.  People on this forum have told me they were carp - it looks like the right kind of water for them.  The only problem there is shore access very limited.

Just my two cents :)

Kayaking at sturgeon slough many years ago, I was surprised at how many I was able to spook up in all the little channels that criss cross that area.  I have also fished for them there and can tell you that there are some nice fish in there.

It used to also have a tonne of frogs and tadpoles, but I don't think it is the same anymore. Maybe the bass ate them all?

Are there bass in there too?  I have heard that rumoured but not confirmed.

From what I understand about Carp, the key is to cast to them in any possible spot without them seeing you, read the BC Outdoors by Garry at Riverside or just stop in there, he will help you out.

One word caught my eye STEALTH!!

Nah, I think I will blame the bass if you don't mind.   :P

And yes, there are bass in there... tonnes of them, and some really big ones (probably all fattend up on frogs tadpoles and cutties)

Oh goody!  Does that mean I can try my hand at bass fishing in Burnaby lake?

I can't comment on the bass politics but, if they are there,  I am always very happy to go after them.   My question:

Has anybody caught bass in Burnaby lake?  [ probably asking too much, I know nobody likes to reveal secret spots   :-[)

...and by the way,  I hear they will be dredging that lake this year so I am not sure good fishing will last in that lake (...assuming it is good now).

where did you hear they are dredging the lake??? they might be doing this to make it deeper so that it can sustain fish better  ;) I think they need to do that with Green Timbers here in Surrey.

There is a section of still creek between Burnaby lake and dairyland (just off lougheed hyway ) there were people fishing so I stopped to see what they were catching . They had so many carp on that little bridge it was unbelievable , however some of the carp were very ugly . I would not eat a carp caught from there , there a lot factories that may leak into still creek .

Some people in my building do volunteer work cleaning and fixing up around Burnaby Lake.  According to them, there are plans to dredge the middle section of the lake to make it deeper.  I think they are doing this because the lake is turning into a marsh as it fills up with sediment.   Maybe it's good, maybe not - I can't help thinking human interferance in natural processes tends to be detrimental but I guess that is a topic for another thread.
