In its simplest terms the centerpin has a 1:1 retrieve ratio ie. one revolution of the spool will bring in one revolution of line. The Shimano Calcutta 400 baitcaster for example has a 4.7:1 ratio. It allows you retrieve more line in less time. This equates to more casts. Personally I find a centerpin allows for a smoother drift.

Center pin = more natural drift of presentation on the river, as it drifts.

When i float fish , i use nothin but pins and when i chuck spoons or other gear its a calcutta.  The advantage of the bait caster is a faster retrieve which means more casts in a day.  = more hookups?   ::)  The pin is a sense of 1-1 battle with the fish.  Total control or lack there of!   ;D
