Fishing line

Since the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked....

I see a lot about different lines, I'm only familiar with good ol' nylon monofilament.  What is "braided" line, why is it "better", are there any drawbacks, and is nylon going the way of the dodo?

If I don't know others must not know too, so consider this a public service  ;)

Braided lines are generally considered more sensitive. The advantages are: sensitivity, small diameter (eg. a 30 lb test Tuff line has the diameter of approx. 8 lb. test), generally stronger. The disadvantages are: cost, has a tendency to "dig" into your line on the reel, tends to fray after use.

Are they nylon?

I can see the advantage of lower diameter in a place with strong current (i.e. in a river), and it would increase the capacity of of your reel.  How much more expensive?  I guess its not really worth it if I'm just dabbling at the dock eh?

PS
is it really braided as in 3 strands wound together?

A spool of 1200 yards of 30 lb. Tuff XP would cost $49.99. I would not recommend buying it if you're just fishing off the docks.

when did you buy your tuff line from anglers west ? the price i got quoed on the phone was $ 270. the quote was for 1200 yard of tuff xp .

I must also add they retain no memory and do not stretch which makes for more solid hook sets and increased sensitivtiy especially in strong current.  Expect to pay about 40-50 dollars for a 300 yd spool.

if you bought 30 lbs tuff xp for the price you say for the amount you say....... someone's employee goofed  ;D this does occasionally happen in retail.
I guarantee you will NOT find 1200 yards of any kind of tuff line for that kind of price.
