Post by: chris gadsden on May 26, 2011, 12:58:45 PM
Check out the derby info here and click on the link for the derby poster. It is a great derby to bring the children to, lots of displays, great food and great prizes even if you donot catch a pikeminnow.

7 of us and went tagging pike minnows for the derby today on Cultus Lake. Rodney and Nina also came to do some filming of the fishing. We tagged 33 pike minnows and there has been about 84  now tagged this year. A tagged pike minnow caught on derby day is worth from $100 to $500 depending on how many are caught. Last year there was only one caught and the fish gave the lucky angler $500. I was outfished by most only landing 4 fish big enough to be tagged. It was a beautiful day on the lake and was very calm until about 4:00 when the wind came up.

Derby tickets are now on sale at Freds Custom Tackle, Chilliwack Dart and Tackle, Rosedale Mini Mart and Kent Outdoors.

The derby only one week away tomorrow so do not forget to get your tickets. 75% of the prizes are drawn from tickets bought before the day of the derby so you do not even have to catch a fish to win some great prizes.

sorry if I've missed it, but is there a prize for "biggest entry"?  or top 3 biggest fish or something?  And if so, what was the prize for biggest last year?
thanks.

Yes for boys and girls. They both won bikes. I believe the adult winner won a float tube. Lots of good prizes this year again, bikes, BBQ, 8 camera's, PVR to name a few of the major prizes  that I know of.

All locations of the lake, I belive there was 108 tagged the last 3 weeks. One was recaptured last week so a good chance someone will get one on derby day.

Glad you are taking part in the derby again this year.

never done it at cultus, but in the 'hope river' slough me and a buddy have the same derby every time we can get out there.  we have the most luck from shore, worm and bobber.  they like flatfish there too, but like i said.  different game all together maybe?  i am curious as well, i am going to be at the derby but i have never done it before.  i had heard about it when i was younger, but its nice to see the rename, only met greg a couple times with my friends dad, gary, but he was a great guy.

Hey Chris, I'm attending this derby for the first time with some friends and we are all fishing out of small boats (kayaks and pontoons). Do we need to check in or anything before we launch and start fishing or just show up at the weigh in with our catch after 11am? I've fished a few other derbys and some of them have check ins beforehand and some don't. I'll be out there in my red kayak if anyone wants to stop by and say hello and toss a few tagged pikeminnows my way!  ;)

Fishing starts at daylight and no need to check in before you start fishing. Make sure you buy your tickets before Saturday to qualify for the early bird draws.

Good fishing.

Close to 900 anglers, young and old braved a wet and soggy day at Cultus Lake today to land around 700 Northern Pike Minnows. No special FVSS tagged fish were caught but one pike minnow tagged by FOC was landed. Two members of this forum caught the most fish, one with 146 and the other with 96. The 196 fish gave our well known forum member $392 in cash plus some excellent prizes. The largest pike minnow landed by an adult was 1.66 kg. The junior winners was a boy, with a 0.90 kg pike minnow.

More details and pictures to follow as Rod took a number of pictures.

A brief wrap for the derby that I have written for different media outlets.

900 avid anglers braved a very soggy and wet Saturday at Cultus Lake
angling for Northern Pike Minnow at the Greg Clark Memorial Family
Fishing Derby. The derby is an annual event held on the Father Day
weekend and is organized by the Fraser Valley Salmon Society. The derby
started at daylight and by the end of the derby at 2 PM 762 pike minnows
had been brought to the weigh scales. No specially Fraser Valley Salmon
Society tagged pike minnows were caught that would have given the lucky
angler $500, however many great prizes were awarded including 200 draw
prizes to those that may have not even caught a fish.

Liam Rihela was the big winner as he took home the Greg Clark Memorial
trophy with his 0.90 kg fish. Liam topped the Junior boys division with
this fish and took home a Mountain bike and riding gear.
Aiden Dewit finished a close second with a 0.88 kg pike minnow with
Jack Pinker taking third spot with an 0.65 entry. Cole Duffy caught the
most pike minnows by a junior boy as he landed 20.

In the junior girls division a 0.47 kg pike minnow also gave Tegan Jones
first place winning a mountain bike and riding gear. Emma Kelly took
second with her 0.32kg fish with Brooke Snow placing third with a 0.06kg
pike minnow. Brooke Curtis  caught the most fish, 9 among the junior
girls that took part in the derby.

Over in the adult part of the derby Terry Summer caught the biggest pike
minnow of the derby with a 1.66 kg entry. Summer was awarded a Fish Cat
U Boat, rod/reel combo along with a tackle box and tackle. Justin Robert
was second with a 1.28 kg fish and Dale Billsten took third place with a
1.02 kg pike minnow. Daniel Krenz caught a whopping 146 pike minnows
taking the adult section in landing the most pike minnows. This gave Krenz
a Fish Cat U Boat, rod/reel combo along with a tackle box and tackle.
Peter Buck also had a good day on the water catching 96 fish giving him
second spot.

Mike Guthrie won the Bill Otway Memorial Prize draw in memory of Otway
who passed away this past year. Otway was an advocate for fishers and
hunters throughout British Columbia and Canada.

Owen Skonberg member of the Cultus Lake Park's Board presented Frank Kwak,
president of the Fraser Valley Salmon Society with a commemorative picture thanking
the society for their community work of putting on the derby for the last number of years.

Much thanks goes to all the volunteers and sponsors that made the derby once again possible.
Also thanks goes to Dean Werk from Great River Fishing Adventures that rounded up 10 guide
boats that took 172 children and adults out for free fishing trips during the length of the event.

We were using indicators with chironomids on spin caster rods (tipped with worms but chironies were working by themselves)
They were mostly 3-4 inches long though. I got a few that were 6-8 inches...

Wow! this is fast becoming technical fishing!  Love it.
Can see the future ...TV shows, big name fishers (hope April is one ;) all showing up at the derby, trying to beat EveryDay's record.  Picture Gierach casting cane off a main beach wharf ;D

Seriously though, this is becoming a major fishing event, at least to BC standards - maybe some bigger name sponsers should be looking at that.

Can almost guarantee we will be weighing in more little 3-4 inchers next year than this year, had a late start at 7:30.

The emphases has shifted from catching the larger pike minnow to catching the smaller juveniles due to the $2.00 per fish rule and the prize for the most fish caught. Not one tagged fish was caught,
due in most part to the areas being fished. The whole point of the derby was to try and eliminate as many of the larger fish as possible. Maybe you should think about dropping the most fish category,
the $2.00/ fish ( which would save $) and go to the most weight caught. This would encourage people to fish for the larger fish. I understand next year you will not be receiving the same $ from some of the sponsors. How about $ 2.00/fish for kids only and most weight by adult category.

Hey Peter I am curious about something..
Why is the point to eliminate the larger ones that have spawned at least once if not more, rather than eliminate the smaller ones before they have a chance to spawn?
Those huge ones have spawned multiple times, and the larger the fish the more eggs they carry.
Maybe drop the $2 a fish, but not the most fish category as I still think it's better to eliminate the smaller guys than the big ones.

Drop the most fish category? Excuse me but this whole derby is to help eliminate these invasive species which are hurting our weak cultus sockeye run.

From what I saw in the derby, those who did get big fish, got few. Those who got average sized fish and smaller did better with numbers. Maybe the bigger ones are smarter, harder to get at, or just less of them? So if you eliminate the most fish category, everyone will focus on the larger fish, which in return will yeild alot less dead pikeminnow. Which if I am correct means there will be more pikeminnow out there ready to feed on juvenile sockeye.

Why not do a combined weight category instead? That way people bringing in lunker can compete with people racking up numbers.

Drop the most fish category? Excuse me but this whole derby is to help eliminate these invasive species which are hurting our weak cultus sockeye run.

1. Northern pikeminnow is not an invasive species, it is native to Cultus Lake, just like many other watersheds in British Columbia.

2. The purpose of the derby is not to eliminate the population of northern pikeminnow completely, but to control the population so Cultus Lake sockeye salmon population can rebound.

3. The state of Cultus Lake sockeye salmon population is the result of human related activities, ie. commercial harvest. Since it's harder to eliminate the growing population of human in the Lower Mainland, we prefer to lay blame on a species that has direct conflict with us when it comes to consuming salmon.

Personally, I'd like to see a fact sheet containing information such as the above plus fish IDs handed out to derby participants.

Some good points Big Fisher but NPM are not an invasive species, at least not in Cultus.  Predators on sockeye yes, but so are the coho, cutthroat and char.  My feeling on this issue is unless the eradication program continues indefinitely (which it won't due to funding issues), these smaller juvenile NPM will eventually fill the niche left by the removal of the larger, older fish, meaning we will be back to square one.
To keep this sockeye population viable, through the NPM population control and a hatchery program, is costing about $250k annually.  I cannot see that kind of money being available much longer.

 ED
Adult pike minnow are the ones that are consuming large numbers of sockeye smolts, not the 4-5 inch juveniles that we were targeting on derby day. As you mentioned the larger adults have thousands of eggs and eliminating them from the spawning cycle in effect eliminates future juveniles from the system. One reason few larger adults were caught was the fact that the majority of anglers were fishing in water that was only 7-8 feet deep. Targeting juvenile fish. The larger adults are for the most part in the deeper water and have become more difficult to catch due to the removal effort the last few years. It was interesting that not one tagged fish was caught even though 100 were tagged over a two month period. I'm sure there can be some compromise on the rules , but as Chris has said, you will break the bank. If everyone figures out how to catch all the juveniles there wont be enough money to cover the cost. There was mention that some of the sponsors would not be  able to provide
as much funding next year due to budget cuts.

I see what you mean Buck.

I worked on the pikeminnow boat last year.
As you said the bigger ones tend to stay in water 15-20 feet deep unless spawning where they come right up against shore.
I think another reason not many larger ones were caught is that they seem to only be active in warm sunny conditions.
Last year we couldn't even net fish at the beginning of the year because it was cold and they were down deep.

Also the pikeminnow (we found anyways) hardly moved at all. The same school would be in the same spots year after year.
The big ones have their areas (which I might have to target next year), and the little ones have their areas.
I can almost guarantee that those tagged fish were most likely within a 500 m radius of where they were tagged. Someone finds out where they are into a lot of money.

As said before. I would be fine with taking away the $2 a fish. I still however say leave the most fish category.
I think it would be a good thing with even 5 people trying to win that category and targeting juveniles taking out 100+ fish each.
As Dave said, the smaller ones will just fill the void of the bigger ones. We already noticed last year fish becoming mature at a SMALLER size.
The more you take out the bigger ones and leave the smaller ones, the more nature corrects itself and fills the gap.

I also think that it would be better to pay out for lots of smaller fish rather than pay a potential of $500 bucks for one tagged fish.
Even if we get 250 fish, we are only costing the same amount as 1 tagged fish and took out 249 more than the guy that got the (possibly) tagged one.

What if 20 anglers were to catch 100 fish each? That would amount to a lot of $$$ the Salmon Society would have to pay out . Where do you think all the money is going to come from? The potential
to catch a lot more fish ( juveniles ) with all the exposure the derby has created is a given. You and I both know a number of anglers who have expressed interest in next years derby. I'm not the one who will be making the decision on next years derby and it may stay the same. Either way I will be out doing my part to help slaughter the little buggers.

I agree.
If every angler was hitting 100 little guys they would go broke for sure.
However there were boats around us all day and many were not catching any while we were hauling them in constantly.
As said before, maybe make the tagged ones worth less or not $500 a piece. You could also take away the $100 draws. That's an extra $1000 towards fish caught.

I will def be there right along with you slaying the little buggers even if they are no longer $2 a fish.
More outta the lake the better.
Looking forward to next years derby already!

I would pay 10 bucks to fish in the derby no problem. Maybe if it's popular enough the entry fee can go to ease the finances. I didn't catch anything but I did get someone else to go to the derby. :) He's already talking about bringing his family next year.
