charter recommendation
« on: May 14, 2014, 01:55:09 AM »

Hi,
I was hoping to get some guidance as to good charters in the Vancouver area or Victoria on Vancouver Island. Hopefully targeting Salmon-halibut. around August-Sept.
We will be in Vancouver for 10 days and 3 on the Island.
This trip has been a long time coming and planning.Really looking forward to it, and hopefully meet a few from here.

Thanks

Wayne,

Island Outfitters in Victoria is a good one to go with when you are there. The marina where their boats are can be reached by walking from most hotels so you can leave your car at the hotel parking lot, which is a huge plus because parking can be a challenge in that city. They do offer both salmon and halibut fishing. http://www.islandoutfitters.ca

Another one, just outside of Victoria, in Pedder Bay Marina, is Sea Ghost Charters. This one is owned and operated by one person so it is easier to communicate with if that's your preference. His price is also very reasonable too. http://www.seaghostcharters.com

I've never tried both but recommending them because they are reputable pro staffs of one of our advertisers. I am however going out with Island Outfitters in a couple of weeks from now so look for that report and review later this month.

For the Vancouver Area, you may want to try out trolling for both sockeye and chinook salmon at the Fraser River mouth with Bon Chovy Fishing Charters or Pacific Angler. Both are very experienced guiding operations based out of Downtown Vancouver.

Further East in the Fraser Valley, you should consider booking for a sturgeon trip, or a sturgeon/salmon combined trip. There are quite a few good ones to choose from so I'll just list them. For this particular trip, you want to book early as they are popular (sturgeon fishing is generally fairly consistent so people book early, whereas salmon fishing is seasonal and unpredictable so last minute bookings are more common).

Good luck!

I'd recommend getting away from the the more crowded areas.  Me, I spend two weeks every year in Kyuquot, which is about 2/3 of the way up Vancouver Island on the west coast, just south of the Brooks peninsula.  It takes a bit more work to get out there, but the salmon and hali fishing up is amazing.

I've never fished with a guide there (or anywhere else), but I've spent a lot of time in that community and had the opportunity to observe many of the guiding outfits up there on and off the water.  I'm sure many of them are good, but Rugged Point Lodge (www.ruggedpointlodge.com) has the newest facility and some really good guides.

I have used 2 Reel in Sooke for the past three years.  Once in June for springs and once in October for coho.  There is a great Best Western Hotel right beside the marina.  Ron at 2 Reel will look after you very well.
