Remembrance
« on: October 29, 2004, 02:48:21 PM »

Poppies are out today.  Don't forget.
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I can guarantee you I won't forget. Having had a father who served in Korea I learned many valuable lessons about the sacrifices young men and women everywhere made so that we may all enjoy the freedoms we have today. But if you want to truly honor the heroes of past war's by all means, buy a poppy. Or you could take a couple hours on Remembrance Day and drop into your local Legion Hall. There you'll meet some of the people that we owe so much to. Go ahead, sit down, have a beer, talk and revel in awe at the history of years gone by. These very special people won't be with us for
to much longer and if you really want to honour thier acts
of courage go meet some of them. And tell them. Thank You. I'll be there as I try to be every year and when the Scottish Brigade comes marching thru with drums and bagpipes a'playing look closely, and you just might see the tear in my eye.

Our veterans are our true Canadian heroes. God bless them all.

We march in the Parade at Memorial Park, 'tween Fraser and Knight on 41st, with the Cubs and Scouts.  I've been practicing drill with my kids so as to be able to show our respect in the march past.  When someone complains that they'll be cold, I remind them of what the soldiers had to endure when they were fighting.  They didn't get to go back in for hot chocolate if they were cold.  Maybe I'll see some of you down there.

Good for you DS and you sure are right about the hot chocolate. Huge sacrifices these men and women made and it makes me feel special when I am able to sit with these people and hear them speak of things that they've done and seen. I have alway's believed that if you want to learn about life speak to someone who has already lived it. And believe me, what you get from one afternoon
spent talking to the very people that were in a particular battle you will never get from a book.

Since when was snagging just a question of ethics and personal choice?

Have talked with artillery men, snipers, supply clerks...they all got a hearty "Thanks!" from me.  One gentleman was sitting alone at a table with a scrap book.  We invited him to join us at our table.  He politely declined, and showed me his scrap book.  It was pictures of his boat, (navy), and of his various shipmates, and the woman that he ended up marrying.  He was the last of them, and they used to always sit at that table every year.  All I could do really was buy him a beer.  It was pretty touching.

Just finished teaching WW1 to my grade 11's. Last thing I did was post the stats of dead/injured/captured.......even the indifferent students took notice. 37 million people is a sobering thought.

We owe them so much.
