Hey dudes..going for my annual trip up to a friends cabin on Thormanby Island/Buckaneer Bay.....just wondering if anyone has any info on what I might catch up in that area right now...we have a boat, and want to catch something.
cheers
Vince

Not sure how it is now ...but years ago Pirates Rock on the south end of Thormondy was my father-in laws fav haunt for mooching liveys. Not sure if the springs/coho are there yet.

Sadly there's very very little left to catch in that area. :'(
Changing currents now concentrate bait on the other side of the strait and Salmon follow the bait.
Decades of almost uncontrolled bottomfish pillage have left local reefs bereft of anything worth fishing for and now many spots are closed permanently.
See this link for proof of just how bad things are

You might try the west side of Bjerre Shoal to troll or Jig but don't expect much.

really...seems in 2 days last year I caught over 20 springs trolling....just a good day I guess

Two questions Vince.
If you're such a Hot Producer why ask us peasants where and how to fish? ???
Are you sure those weren't Pink Salmon? ;D
-
Ahhh Sam..so entertainingly confrontational.
I asked because...
a) last year I went on a whim...with hobbled gear, and I can't for the life of me remember when I was there... I think it was September. It was a seasonal question....S E A S O N A L.
b) pinks aren't usually over 60 cm are they? Swimming at 150+ feet?
c) I was only asking...and your negative response seemed contrary to what I had experienced.
The pink text suits you however.

Sounds like a Sharphooks conversation, :'(
-
never fear...Sam and I do this from time to time
-
Pinks you can catch @ any depth on just about anything.
I've caught them to 8.5 pounds and last year there were a lot who were bigger-September is a strong month for Pink returns in odd years on the South Coast.
The easiest way to tell the difference is the size of the scales-don't bother with anything else-if the scales are tiny then it's a Pink
BTW-The response I gave you is from fishing the area extensively since about 1979-heck I can even spell Thormanby if I want to!
I could go on and on about how Nelson Island, Agamemnon Channel, Andersen Bay and Lasqueti Island used to be so great and are now so dead but I won't.

big scales...green back....medium sized black spots
fishing with a DFO dude...and he seemed to be pretty sure they were chinook
-
Just to clarify how to distinguish the different species of salmon... I usually just ask the fish I caught what they are and they just tell me.
Hope this makes it very clear. ;D
Jon out.

black gums...I forgot that one..they all had black gums
