Title: Capilano River July 2nd, 2007
Post by: Nicole on July 02, 2007, 11:41:19 PM
Well today I was skunked after fishing 4pm-930pm... I got some awesome looking roe from Sea Run, but it didnt help today... I didn't see anyone hooking anything at all... It's like the fish gods flicked off the switch. It was weird.

Hey I went down to fish that big pool below the marine drive bridge... Holy man did it look freaking awesome! Then a native river guardian came up and told me it was private property, and that I couldn't fish there. I was bummed, it was the best flywater on that entire river!

Has anyone else been kicked out of there fishing the west side? I'm assuming it's legitimately Squamish land but I thought I'd ask... Nice enough guy though...

Cheers,
Nicole

You were quite unlucky, Nicole. I used to sneak in and out of that pool/run before they had a chance to come after me.  ;D

I got my first Cap coho today in the fast water using peach wool. Very few fish blow by. But Cable Pool seems full of fish but they just did not seem to be interested at all to anything fishermen threw at them in the afternoon. I tried my own really nice cured roe, followed by spinner to no avail. There were fly guys, spoon men, even one fishing quill, but no one hooked anything at all mid afternnoon. Finally went down to white water and luck out with a 2-3 lb range coho. It feels a bit stange to hit a 44lb giant on Saturday and fought & landed the beast in 45 minutes and then this tiny coho today which gave me lest than 1 minute even though I scaled down to a small rod. But just as excited.  :D

It's all native fishing only from the marine drive bridge to the mouth of the river.but on the west side below the silver train bridge is open to non native fishing.

I went to the Cap last night and got a beauty 3-4 lb'er.

Was there tonight. Got checked by two CO's that were at Cable pool. Good to see. Saw three hooked on the fly, and my buddy hooked one on bait. But that was it.

With your freshwater fishing license, you can fish for salmon but cannot keep them. If you intend to keep the salmon that you catch, then you must purchase the salmon stamp.

Caught my first fish of the year today at Capilano river. I caught a nice coho using collorado spinner.  :D

Later on at around 6pm-8pm  the place where I was was packed with about 15 people. Everybody was casting over each others lines. lol

That is definitely scary. He is indeed fortunate that the water was low. If it had been higher he would have been fished out by North Shore Rescue. Be careful out there.

He didn't fish off from the cliff. He was fishing from the rock platform near the water. I think he was ok 'cause he continued to fish afterwards.

Well. good he was alright. Slipping and bonking yourself on a rock can't be a fun thing to do.

Thanks for the fly suggestion. I think I'll try a sinking line and cast out. I hope it gets down fast enough. The water there seems to move pretty fast - very pretty place and so close to the city!

If you can get your line around the point without snagging on the branches. I wouldn't attempt it if the rock is wet. It's just not worth it.

Boy are you a newbie!! Its easy, takes some finese but keep at it you'll get it. I did it twice this morning. Some guy likes to leave his double red roe all over the top ledge, I collected 5 really nice pieces and got two fish in a few minutes with it. -Thanks dude, who ever you are.

On friday I was walking back from the Dog Leg Pool on the west side of the bank and when I got to the cable bridge one of the fiishermans dog slipped and fell in from one of the steep rocks.  There were people around and nobody asked if the guy needs help. They kept on fishing and waching the poor dog trying to climb up only to fall back in. It was so sad to watch :( The guy went in after him so I run over and climbed low enough so he can pass me his little jack russel terrier.  The little guy was so shaken up. After his owner kept on fishing and his dog kept a good distance from the ledge.  I guess the dog learned his lesson. heh

anyways,
I Alway go to the Dog Leg Pool to fish. Has any body made it down to Three Rocks Pool? I found a way but half way down there is a rock face about 6' and very slippery. I was thinking on taking rope with me or making steps using rope and wooden planks. The Three Rocks Pool look so inviting.

Be very careful if you're going down to Three Rocks. Best if you have a buddy along. Just last week a guy felled 20 feet after taking a wrong step. Good thing his buddy was around to lend assistance.

I always wonder who put those ropes and mounting brackets there anyway? One of the Cable Pool spots is a sloping rock platform and it has a series of ropes attached to some steel brackets mounted on the rocks. Those brackets seem professionally mounted and they are high quality stainless steel. Did the Park people put them there, or DFO? Can't imagine a fisherman will go through all that while he has no claim to the spot.

It could be the kayakers, they're pretty serious, they practice rolling and recovering in that pool.

I stopped fishing the Cap after seeing an asian kid from Taiwan fell in and drown. It was high water and he had a backpack on his back fisihng at the cable pool. I was just watching and he got a fish on and the next thing he was in the fast water with his backpack dragging him down. It was on the news and the parents had to fly over to pick up his body.

That was a few years ago and that was the last time. Its just too danderous!!!

It must be the one on July 1st Canada Day at least 6-10 years ago. I clearly remember that day because I took a greenie fishing on that day. We first went to the Vedder for the big fish but found tons of people there without any fish. So we returned to the Cap which was flooding due to a few days of heavy rain. We went to the Cable Pool to check it out and found the river raging past under those rocks. It was high high and yellowish river. People were fishing and actually catching some fish. We saw quite a crowd above the cliff. I told the greenie that it is not worth the risk there. One wrong move means sure death. So we went down to the lower river and still caught our limit. Atlas, some one did fall in later in the day and drowned. Some one told me a few days later that, like Steelieman, he saw the Oriental guy slipped, and was trying to grab him to no avail. He told me he could never forget that last look of horror on that man's face.  :(

The Cap is very dangerous because most people are used to its lazy flowing low flow most of the time. But when it floods, people don't take it seriously and got the worst of it. I once also met a fishing instructor who would not even talk about the Cap when he mentioned about the popular local rivers like the Vedder, Chehalis and Squamish. He admitted that he would not want to talk about it because his fishing buddy was drowned in that innocent little river.  So, it happens more often than we think. Be careful of the Cap. No fish is worth your life. There is always another day to fish as long as you are alive. Fish in peace, and fish safe too.  :) :)

I remember the incident. My buddy pull the body out downstream from the Dogleg Pool. He was already dead. The late Ted Peck's teenage son drowned at the Badger Hole. I've seen people do some incredibly stupid things on that river for a fish.

Those are sad stories but are worth mentioning. It seems too easy to forget the haszards in such a pretty setting. It doesn't take much for someone to get into a bad situation.

BTW, I think that includes small pets. I saw the fella with the small dog fishing on the rock. A small pet would easily be killed as well in that setting.

May I ask, does anyone have suggestions as to 'safer' areas to fish at the Cap and how to access those areas. Thanks in advance.

Fish lower river. Park at the mall down Taylor way i think it is. Then walk up river past the marine way bridge. anywhere above there is legally fishable.

I know the guy who was standing next to him when it happened...seriously messed up...but this brings up an interesting point..
While on the Vedder last week, you see all the kids out swimming etc. I don't wear waders in summer and just wade in my boots...Allot of the crossings etc that had me worried before were quite simple when you saw the kids run across it and sit down in it...Made me think that it wouldn't be a bad idea to actually practice a fall or two while there... I watched the show "man versus wild" and he talks about corkscrewing your body to move through fast water to the shoreline...might save your life one day...
